Alesch Named To Lead Iowa Lakes Wrestling Program
ESTHERVILLE – Iowa Lakes Community College’s gain is a loss for Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire.
Officials at Iowa Lakes announced Tuesday, June 5, that Cody Alesch of Graettinger has been named to the position of Head Wrestling Coach at Iowa Lakes.
Alesch will also fill the role of Housing Director at the Estherville Campus of the college, pending approval of the college’s Board of Trusteees,
Alesch, a Graettinger native, is no stranger to the wrestling mats, as he was a two-time state medal winner, earning second and fourth place finishes as a Graettinger Pirate before graduating in 1998. Alesch then took his skills to Wartburg College in Waverly, where he was a three-year letter winner, as well as an Academic All-American in 2000, and member of the Knights’ National Championship Team in 1999 and National Runner-Ups in 2000 and 2002.
Following graduation from Wartburg with a Bachelors Degree, Alesch moved back to Graettinger, where he assumed the leadership of the Graettinger wrestling program in 2006 through the 2012 season. In that span, he coached 20 state qualifiers, 14 state place winners, two state champions; two National High School Coaches Association Senior Academic All-Americans; four Team Regional Dual Qualifying teams; two Sectional Team Championships; and, two District Team Championships.
In 2007, Alesch was named the Northwest Conference Coach of the Year and posted an overall Dual Team Record of 65-38 in his tenure in Graettinger.
“Coach Alesch brings an outstanding competitive background to the sport having wrestled at a high level in high school and at Wartburg,” noted Iowa Lakes Athletic Director Troy Larson. “Having been a successful high school coach at Graettinger with all the local connections makes him a great fit for the position. He is passionate about young adults and the sport of wrestling which will serve him well. I am confident he will do an outstanding job at Iowa Lakes.”
Alesch also has high expectations coming into his new role. “I am extremely excited at the opportunity to be a part of Iowa Lakes and the surrounding communities as this is where my love for the sport began,” he said. “The Iowa Lakes wrestling program has a great foundation already in place. “
As Head Coach at Iowa Lakes, Alesch will seek out well-rounded recruits. “I?will bring everything I?can to ensure the program stays successful for a long time. I look forward to living a personal dream of guiding student-athletes on and off the mat in a sport and community that I respect and care so much about.”
Alesch resides in Graettinger with his wife, Teresa, the 6-12 Principal at Graettinger-Terril, and their children, five-year old Sacha and two-year old Teague.
Along with his leadership duties as the Head Wrestling Coach, he will assume the position of housing coordinator, with duties ranging from promoting healthy lifestyles and enforcing housing policies, to meeting with students to solve issues when necessary.
