Lady Wolverines Claim 4×100 State Crown

DES?MOINES – To earn a state championship in any event in track and field is no small accomplishment. West Bend-Mallard’s Lady Wolverines did just that Saturday afternoon by capturing the Class 1A Girls 4×100 title at the2012 Iowa High School Track and Field Championships in Des Moines.

The Jim Duncan Track at Drake Stadium seemed to suit the Lady Wolverines and Wolverine state qualifiers just fine.

The highlight of the trip was the 4×100 relay title Saturday afternoon, as the foursome of Harrison Schmidt, Meredith Collins, Kaley Lempke and Kenzie Grimm would blaze their way around the hallowed blue oval in :51.54 to win the title, after they had qualified on Friday afternoon with a :51.08 time.

The same foursome would earn a fourth place finish in the 4×200 relay on Friday with their 1:48.04 effort and then opened Saturday’s action as the Sprint Medley Relay with a time of 1:54.34, which was good for eighth place overall.

The Lady Wolverines got a fifth place finish in the shot put from Jessica Abrahamson with a throw of 36’8.75″ on ?Thursday, and on Friday, Abrahamson would finish seventh in the discus with a throw of 113’11”.

Meredith Collins would compete in the 100 meter dash and finished ninth with a time of :13.46, while Kaley Lempke would run a :13.73 time in the 100 meters to finish 15th overall and in the 200 meter dash, Kenzie Grimm ran a :27.64 to finish in 16th place overall.

The Distance Medley relay, with Kayla Banswart, Wendy Grimm, Ashley Schmidt and Portlind Schmit would finish in 19th place with their 4:30.78 time and the 4×800 relay, comprised of Sarah Berte, Madelynn Gehrt, Ashley Schmidt and Portlind Schmidt finshed 21th with a time of 10:29.28.

For the Wolverine tracksters, the 4×800 relay squad, composes of Jesse Zinnel, Jason Zinnel, Nathan Grimm and Aaron Montag, would earn a fifth place finish at the state meet with their 8:26.98 clocking to pace the boys’ showings.

Mitch Bonnstetter would compete in the 100 meter dash and finished 13th overall with an :11.89 time. Jordan Buhs would compete in the 200 meter dash for the Wolverines and finished with a time of :24.58, good for 22nd place.

Finally, the Distance Medley, with Jordan Buhs, Logan Streit, Mitch Bonnstetter and Aaron Montag finished 16th with a time of 3:46.92.
