Knight Wrestlers Earn Medals At State Meet
DES MOINES Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire’s two State Wrestling Tournament qualifiers each brought home medals for their efforts at the 2012 State Meet that concluded Saturday night in Des Moines. Tyler Dalen would finish in fifth place overall at 106 pounds in Class 1A and Ty Gibson would finish in seventh place at 132 pounds in Class 1A for the Knights.
Both wrestlers started their state appearance on a positive note Thursday night with victories. Dalen collected a 4-0 decision win over Brad Kerkhoff of Audubon and Gibson earned 3:33 win by fall over Mitch Gibson of Tri-County-Montezuma.
“That was an important start for us on Thursday,” said GT/RA Head Coach Cody Alesch. “This kept us where we wanted to be.”
Moving into quarterfinal round action on Friday afternoon, Dalen squared off against Isiah Brandt of Sumner-Fredricksburg, and claimed a 6-1 decision victory to move into the semi-final bracket.
The road got a little rocky for Gibson, however, as he was pinned by David Walker of Martensdale-St Mary’s in 2:53, forcing Gibson to wrestle-back to stay alive in the tourney. The young Knight wrestler did just that, meeting Austin Miller of Pocahontas-Area/Pomeroy-Palmer and scoring a win by fall in 5:09 to put him into the consolation quarterfinals to keep his medal hopes alive.
When the semi-final round rolled around, Dalen wrestled Blake Dietz of Nashua-Plainfield, who pinned the Knight in 3:39, dropping Dalen into the consolation semi-final round on Saturday morning.
Gibson then took to the mat in the consolation quarterfinals, but lost a 14-2 Major Decision to Brady Meyer of Sumner-Fredricksburg to move into the seventh place match Saturday.
As the sun rose Saturdaymorning in Des Moines, the two Knights knew they were assured of medals, but the final medal would be up to them.
Dalen took to the mat in the quarterfinal against Gable Verschoor of Woodbury Central, his district finals foe, and was pinned in 5:11 of the match, putting him in the fifth-place match.
As the final medal round consolation matches took to the mats, Dalen met up with Zach Ulven of Westwood and needed an overtime period before he earned an 11-6 decision victory to finish in fifth place for the Knights at 106 pounds.
Ty Gibson would meet Bryce Jacobs of Clarksville in the seventh-place match and capped off his season with an 8-4 decision to earn the seventh place medal at 132 pounds.
