Area Wrestlers Advance
All wrestlers from Emmetsburg and Graettinger-Terril/Rutrhven-Ayrshire remained alive after the first day of action at the 2012 Iowa High School Wrestling Championships as Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire’s Tyler Dalen at 106 pounds advanced to the quarterfinals Friday afternoon with a 4-0 decisioin victory over Brad Kerkhoff of Audubon, while Ty Gibson, wrestling at 132 pounds, scored a 3:33 win by fall over Mitch Gibson of Sumner-Fredricksburg to advance to the quarterfinals against David Walker of Martinsdale-St. Mary’s.
For the Emmetsburg E-Hawks, the tourney started on a down note, as Nick Schnay, who had qualified at 160 pounds, had to drop out of the tournament before the event started due to a medical condition.
In Thursday’s opening round, Justin Studer started out with a 2:19 win by fall over Vance Kurka of Iowa Valley-Marengo in action at 145 pounds. Studer advances to face Tyler Foubert of Tri-County-Montezuma in the quarterfinal round.
At 152 pounds, Brady Bailey scored the only points of the match to win a 2-0 decision over Shane Swank of Mount Ayr. Brady will meet John Pint of North Linn in the quarterfinals.
Andrew Wellik would earn advancement to the quarterfinals with a 9-4 decision victory over Zach Holthaus of NAashua-Plainfield. In the quarters, Wellik will meet Tanner Tenley of North Cedar-Stanwood.
For Austin McCartan, the first round was a disappointing 5-4 decision loss to Mackenzie Houseman of Riverside Oakland. However, McCartan earned a wrestle-back win with a 4:50 win by fall over Ethan Jopnes of Interstate 35-Truro. McCartan will continue his quest for a medal in the consolation rounds on Thursday.
