E-Hawks Upset LeMars
Coming off a big win over Western Christian a week earlier, Emmetsburg’s E-Hawks gave their head coach a big birthday present Thursday with a 57-56 upset victory over League-leading LeMars.
The win avenged an early season setback in LeMars for the E-Hawks, who entered the first round of tournament play Monday night at Sioux Central.
Thursday’s game was up tempo from the opening tipoff. The two teams exchanged buckets with Emmetsburg taking an early lead only to have LeMars tie the game at 17-17 to end the first quarter.
The battle continued in the second quarter, with the E-Hawks leading by as many as six points until LeMars closed the gap to 32-30 at the intermission.
LeMars would hold the hot hand in the third quarter, taking a 46-40 lead to start the final quarter, but Emmetsburg fought back to retake the lead off a Michael Wolff jumper at 51-50 with 3:49 to play.
The lead would flop back and forth as the clock ticked down, but with 1:00 to go in the game, LeMars held a 56-55 lead.
Emmetsburg would get the ball and set up the offense to go for last shot, but with :37 to go, Ryan Kliegl got a clear look and put up a jumper to retake the lead at 57-56.
After an exchange of possessions, LeMars would set up for a final shot, but Kliegl came up with a block with :01 to go to preserve the victory.
Michael Wolff had 20 points to lead Emmetsburg, while Ryan Kliegl added 16 points and Jake Jackson dropped in 15 points. Marcus Akridge would chip in four points and Jake Carlson rounded out the effort with two points.
