E-Hawks Send Five To State Wrestling Tournament

SIBLEY – With two champions and three runner-up finishers, Emmetsburg will send five wrestlers to the State Wrestling Tournament this week in Des Moines.

Justin Studer and Andrew Wellik both won individual district titles at Saturday’s Class 1A?District Tournament at Sibley-Ocheyedan.

Brady Bailey, Nick Schany and Austin McCartan all earned second place finishes to also advance to the state tournament, with Schany earning his state tourney appearance in a thrilling wrestleback at 160 pounds.

Justin Studer started his day at 145 pounds with a 1:23 win by fall over Matt Wandrey of Ridge View. For the finals, Studer would face his Sectional opponent, Isidro Topete of West Sioux and eared a 3-1 decision victory to win the 145 pound championship.

Andrew Wellik also started his district tournament with a pin, as he scored a 1:59 win by fall over Mitch Greene of Lawton-Bronson. For the finals, Wellik wrestled Jacob Pearson of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn and claimed a 9-2 decision victory for the 170 pound championship.

At 152 pounds, Brady Bailey earned a 12-0 Major Decision victory over Dylan Rolfes of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn in the opening round before meeting Brett Flynn of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in the finals. Bailey and Flynn would battled hard but Flynn earned a 14-5 Major Decision over Bailey, which gave him second place at 152.

Austin McCartan opened the day at 182 pounds with an 8-5 decision victory over Jared McCoy of Woodbury Central to advance to the finals where he was paired with Okoboji’s Tannery Taylor. The two had met a week earlier in the Sectional final where Taylor had won by a fall.

In the final match, McCartan and Taylor battled to a 4-4 tie after two periods of wrestling, but Taylor was able to score a reversal before McCartan escaped to be edged by a 6-5 score to finish second.

Emmetsburg’s final state qualification came from Nick Schany at 160 pounds. Schany would lose his first round match with Jacob Meehan of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn by a 7-2 decision.

In the consolation match, Schany scored a 1:11 win by fall over Brandon Thompson of Lawton-Bronson, and a win by Meehan in the finals gave Schany a wrestleback opportunity for second place.

Schany would meet Zach Jones of Okoboji in the wrestleback match and would outlast Jones to win second place in a 6-5 decision to qualify for his trip to state.

Also wrestling on Saturday were Brett Steinkamp at 106 pounds and Tayler Wegner at 195 pounds.

Steinkamp was pinned in 1:28 of his first-round match with Gable Verschoor of Woodbury Central. In the consolation match, Steinkamp was pinned in :59 by Luke Kliegl of Ridge View to finish fourth, ending his season.

At 195 pounds, Tayler Wegner opened the day being pinned in :58 by Chet Willer of Akron-Westfield. Going into the consolation round, Wegner was paired with Nathan Myrice of Ridge View. Wegner would earn a 6-5 decision win to finish third, but did not have an opportunity to wrestle back, ending his season.
