E-Hawks Denied In Regional Duals

BRITT – Emmetsburg’s E-Hawk wrestlers traveled to Britt for the Class 1A Regional Duals Tuesday night and earned a split, but will not advance to the State Duals. The E-Hawks defeated Lake Mills by a 46-30 margin, but in the match for the trip to the state tourney, the E-Hawks fell to top-ranked Clarion-Goldfield by a 51-21 score.

Going into the Regional Dual, the E-Hawks were ranked 16th in Class 1A in the dual team rankings. Action started at 195 pounds in the first dual with Lake Mills, coached by former E-Hawk wrestler Alex Brandenburg.

At 195, Tayler Wegner needed just :12 to pin Andy Nicholson, but at 220, Tanner Dahm was pinned in 3:55 by Josh Perez. Andrew Garrelts earned a 1:24 win by fall over Trevor Larson in the 285 pound match before Brett Steinkamp earned a win by forfeit at 106 pounds.

Joey Lowman would lose to Scott Wogen in a 5:14 fall at 113 pounds, but at 120, Nick Merwald rallied late in his match with Lincoln Boehmer and earned a 5:48 win by fall to put the E-Hawks ahead 24-12.

Caige Elbert would be pinned in 1:52 by Noah Irons in the 126 pound match, while at 132 pounds, Tyler Leuer earned a 2-1 decision victory over Brady Schmidt. Joe Schmidt would fall victim to Andy Dahle in a :59 fall in the 138 pound match, and at 145 pounds, Justin Studer was pinned in 1:29 of his match with Calvin Beal as Lake Mills took a 30-27 lead.

However, those would be the last points for Lake Mills, as Brady Bailey came up with a 1:47 win by fall over Cameron Peterson in the 152 pound match to retake the lead. Nick Schany would follow up with a 10-4 decision win over Jon Erickson at 160 pounds. At 170, Andrew Wellik earned a :55 win by fall over Andrew Olsen and Austin McCartan finished off the dual with a 14-4 Major Decision over Ben Irons for the 46-30 win.

In the dual to determine the state qualifier, Emmetsburg got down early against the top-ranked Cowboys of Clarion-Goldfield and would fall by a 51-21 final score.

Starting at 220 pounds, Tanner Dahm lost a hard-fought 3-1 decision to Caleb Hanson before Andrew Garrelts was caught and pinned in 5:01 of the 285 pound match by Mitch Gambrell.

At 106 pounds, Brett Steinkamp was pinned in 4:34 by Zeke Rosenboom and Joey Lowman was pinned in 1:01 of the 113 pound match by Joel Haberman. At 120, Nick Merwald would loose an 18-3 Technical Fall in 4:45 to Aaron Anderson to give the Cowboys a 26-0 lead.

Caige Elbert would be pinned in 5:02 by Taylor Lehman in the 126 pound match and at 132, Tyler Leuer would lose a 14-2 Major Decision to Marcus Peterson. Joe Schmidt would be pinned in :32 by Sam Solis in the 138 pound match to make the score 42-0 against the E-Hawks.

At 145 pounds, Justin Studer battled Matt Odland hard but came up short in an 8-2 decision loss before the E-Hawks got their first points when Brady Bailey received a win by forfeit at 152 pounds.

Nick Schany would earn an 11-2 Major Decision over Jake Haberman at 160 pounds and at 170, Andrew Wellik pinned Ryan Anderson in 1:07.

Austin McCartan added a :55 win by fall over Bailey Kothe in action at 182 before Tayler Wegner was pinned in :47 of the 195 pound match to end the E-Hawks’ dual team season with the 51-21 loss.
