E-Hawks Advance Seven To 1A?District Meet

SECTIONAL?CHAMPIONS - Emmetsburg’s E-Hawks ran away from the field at Saturday’s Class 1A Sectional Wrestling Tournament at Okoboji, winning the team title by 45 points with 206 total points. MILFORD – With seven individual qualifiers advancing to the 1A District meet on Saturday, Emmetsburg’s E-Hawks claimed the team title at Saturday’s Class 1A Sectional tournament. The E-Hawks won the tourney by 45 points over Okoboji, 206-161, and advance to tonight’s (Tuesday) 1A Regional Dual at West Hancock High School, starting at 6 p.m.

Coach Jared Pickett’s wrestlers claimed titles at 145 pounds for senior Justin Studer and at 170 pounds for junior Andrew Wellik. Also advancing to Saturday’s District meet at Sibley-Ocheyedan are Brett Steinkamp at 106 pounds, Brady Bailey at 152 pounds, Nick Schany at 160 pounds, Austin McCartan at 182 pounds and Tayler Wegener at 195 pounds.

Emmetsburg’s Nick Merwald finished third at 120, as did Tyler Leuer at 132 pounds and Andrew Garrelts at 285 pounds. Tanner Dahm finished fourth at 220 pounds, while Joey Lowman finished sixth at 113 pounds. Caige Elbert finished sixth at 126 pounds and at 138 pounds, Joe Schmidt finished in seventh place.

At 145, Justin Studer started with a 1:51 win by fall over Jacob Johnson of Western Christian and then scored an 18-0 Technical Fall in 2:51 of his match wit Tyler Reck of Sibley-Ocheyedan. In the finals, Studer pinned Isidro Topete of West Sioux in 4:18 to win the championship.

Andrew Wellik needed just :39 to pin Sam Anderson of Western Christian in the first round and then earned an 18-4 Major Decision win over Dylan Brockshus of Sibley-Ocheyedan before winning the 170 pound title in a 7-1 decision over David Hernandez of West Sioux.

At 106, Brett Steinkamp drew a first-round bye and then pined Ryan Bolster of Okoboji in 1:40, but in the final, Steinkamp was pinned by Tyler Dalen of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire in 1:27 to finish second.

Brady Bailey also drew a first-round bye, and rallied in his semi-final to pin Taylor Block of Sibley-Ocheyedan in 5:10, but in the final he lost a 9-5 decision to Brett Flynn of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, and had to wrestle-back, Meeting Jacob Van Ginkel of Western Christian, but Bailey won the second place honor with a 3:17 win by fall.

Nick Schany pinned Auggie Jimenez of West Sioux in 5:28 and then pinned Tyler O’Connor of Sibley-Ocheyedan in :59 to advance to the finals, where he lost a tough, 6-5 decision to Zach Jones of Okoboji. Schany would wrestle-back for second place and pinned Mat McGrauth of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire in 1:22 to earn the runner-up finish at 160 pounds.

At 182, Austin McCartan got a first-round bye and then earned 16-0 Technical Fall in 4:30 over Jordan Schemmel of West Lyon before meeting Tanner Taylor of Okoboji in the finals, who pinned McCartan in :30 for his first loss of the season and a second place finish.

For Tayler Wegner at 195, an opening round bye was followed by a 2:54 win by fall over Marshall Eddy of Sibley-Ocheyedan, but in the finals, Wegner would come up short in a 2-0 decision loss to Sam VanGinkel of Western Christian to finish second.

Andrew Garrelts pinned Evan Thorn of HMS in :32 to start the day at 285, but lost a triple overtime 3-4 decision to Patrick Coleman of Sibley-Ocheyedan before defeating Blake Manwarren of Okoboji by a 4-0 tally to place third.

Tyler Leuer opened with a 5:35 win by fall over Zach Sauers of West Lyon at 132, , but lost an 8-2 decision to Heath Nagel of HMS. Leuer would then pin Cole Hieronimus in :44 to place third at 132 for the E-Hawks.

Nick Merwald pinned Cody Chester of West Sioux in 1:13 to open his day at 120 pounds, but lost a 4-1 decision to Austin Thompson of GT/RA, but rebounded to pin Dakota Goodwin of HMS in 5:44 to finish in third place.

Tanner Dahm earned a 3:04 win by fall over Mike Renken of Sibley-Ocheyedan in the opening round at 220, but was pinned in 1:42 by Trevor VanDenTop of Western Christian. Dahm would wrestle Cody Thompson of GT/RA in the consolation match and lost a 6-0 decision to finish fourth.

At 113 pounds, Joey Lowman was pinned in :51 by Brent Reed of Sibley-Ocheyedan to start the day, and after drawing a bye, Lowman met Alejandro Montes of West Sioux and lost a close, 6-5 decision to finish in sixth place.

Caige Elbert would be the first round victim of a 17-1 Technical Fall in 4:13 at the hands of Connor Tonderum of GT/RA, and after a bye, Elbert wrestled Cameron Arnold of Okoboji for fifth place, but came up short in a 10-7 decision to finish sixth for the E-Hawks at 126 pounds.

Rounding out the efforts was Joe Schmidt at 138 pounds. Schmidt was pinned in :15 by Taylor Cody of Okoboji in the opening round and in the first consolation round, Schmidt wrestled Taeric Ezzel of West Lyon, but was pinned in 5:31 to end his day in seventh place.
