E-Hawk Wrestlers Sweep Final Double Dual
POCAHONTAS – The final regular season double dual for the Emmetsburg E-Hawks was a positive experience in a variety of ways. First, the E-Hawks swept both duals with Algona and Pocahontas Area/Pomeroy-Palmer. Then, the E-Hawks welcomed junior Austin McCartan back to the lineup after he suffered a knee injury in football season that kept him off the mats. And thirdly, in the nightcap dual with PAC/PP, the E-Hawks put a full, 14-man lineup on the mat, an accomplishment not done often during the regular season.
In the first duel of the evening, the E-Hawks handled Algona by a 47-18 final score.
Starting at 132, Tyler Leuer earned a 10-0 Major Decision over Austin Long, but at 138 the E-Hawks gave Korey Kuecker a forfeit victory.
Justin Studer would earn a 7-0 decision over Brad Bjustrom in action at 145 to give Emmetsburg a 7-6 lead, but Algona came back to take the 9-7 lead when Brady Bailey lost a 7-2 decision to Weston Shaw at 152 pounds.
Nick Schany would give the lead back to Emmetsburg after the 160 pound match when he pinned Tyler Frideres in 3:57 to make the score 13-9.
At 170, Andrew Wellik made short work of Joe Teague, pinning the Bulldog wrestler in 3:34.
Austin McCartan stepped onto the mat competitively for the first time at 182 pounds this season and battled Garrett Johnson through three periods to win a 6-3 decision victory that gave Emmetsburg 22-9 lead.
Tayler Wegner would score a :47 win by fall over Jeff Buchanan at 195 pounds for a 28-9 lead, but at 220, Tanner Dahm would be pinned in 2:28 of his match with Nick Buchanan to make the score 28–15.
Andrew Garrelts got the momentum back in Emmetsburg’s favor with a :51 pin over Michael Mather in the 285 pounds match and Brett Steinkamp went on to earn a 12-3 Major Decision victory over Matt Hutchinson in action at 106.
With a 38-15 lead, the E-Hawks got a great match from 113 pounder Alex Clark, who would be forced to go to sudden-death overtime after tying his match with Darton Potts at 8-8. Clark got the takedown in the OT to earn the 10-8 decision and give the E-Hawks the 41-15 lead.
Nick Merwald then scored a 3:35 win by fall over Joel Lanus at 120 pounds, but at 126, Caige Elbert would be pinned in 3:27 by Jacob Adams to make the final score 47-21.
However, an incident during a match resulted in the ejection of Algona’s Korey Kuecker from the duel, and also resulted in a three-point reduction for Algona to make the final score 47-18.
Against the host PAC/PP Indians, Emmetsburg’s Joe Schmidt was pinned in 1:09 to open the duel at 138 pounds, but then the E-Hawks hit stride.
Justin Studer pinned Tyler Hubrich in 2:48 at 145 pounds and at 152, Brady Bailey pinned Jared Walker in 2:27. Nick Schany earned a 1;52 win by fall over David Olson in the 160 pound match and at 170, Andrew Wellik won a 17-5 Major Decision over Jacob Sheldahl for a 22-6 E-Hawk lead.
Austin McCartan scored a 2:51 win by fall over Wyatt Block in the 182 pound match and at 195, Tayler Wegner pinned Jacob Schmidt in 2:42.
Tanner Dahm would be the victim of a pin in 3:42 of his 220 pound match against Tyler Schneidmiller for the Indians’ second win of the duel.
But at 285, Andrew Garrelts pinned Josh Dahlsten in 2:21 to make the score 40-12 for the E-Hawks.
Brett Steinkamp would receive a win by forfeit in the 106 pound match, but at 113, Alex Clark was leading his match with Mitchell Brinkman by a 6-5 tally late in the first period when he was injured and had to default to the PAC/PP wrestler.
At 120 pounds, Nick Merwald would go the distance in earning a 16-2 Major Decision over Taylor Hallberg before Caige Elbert battled Kyler Lyon into the third period before scoring a 5:37 win by fall for the E-Hawks.
The action would close with Tyler Leuer receiving a forfeit victory at 132 for the 62-18 final tally.
The E-Hawks, including JV wrestlers, will travel to Spencer this Friday evening for the Lakes Conference Tournament. Wrestling will start at 5 p.m. at Spencer High School.
