E-Hawks Sweep Conference Dual

Emmetsburg’s E-Hawk wrestlers earned a sweep of their final Lakes Conference duals Thursday night by defeating LeMars and Estherville Lincoln Central. The wins give the E-Hawks a mark of 4-3 in the?Lakes and 9-9 overall in duals on the season.

Emmetsburg opened the Senior Night duals with a 63-18 win over the LeMars Bulldogs. After honoring senior wrestlers Justin Studer and Andrew Garrelts and senior cheerleaders Brittany Franxman and Aleysha Schutz, wrestling action started at 220 pounds against the Bulldogs.

The E-Hawks’ Tanner Dahm was pinned in 1:43 by J.D. Steen to start out at 220, but at 285, E-Hawk senior Andrew Garrelts needed just :55 to pin Alex Hermes to tie the dual.

At 106, Brett Steinkamp was pinned in 4:35 of his match with Nic Madsen. The E-Hawks would regain the lead for good as Alex Clark at 113, Nick Merwald at 120 and Caige Elbert at 126 pounds all received wins by forfeit.

In action at 132 pounds, Tyler Leuer earned a 9-4 decision victory over Mason Cook, but at 138 pounds, Joe Schmidt was pinned in :41 by Luke DeBoer.

Senior Justin Studer got Emmetsburg back on the winning track in the 145 pound match when he scored a 2:38 win by fall over Skyler Gries to put the E-Hawks up by a 33-18 tally.

At 152 pounds, Brady Bailey earned a :34 win by fall over Kyle Williams and at 160, the E-Hawks welcomed Nick Schany back into the lineup after an injury. Schany made his return a positive experience with a 1:29 win by fall over Mitchell Weaver.

Andrew Wellik earned a :58 win by fall over Nate Kessenich in the 170 pound match before Tyler Henson battled his way to a 5:06 win by fall over David Hernandez in action at 182 pounds.

Rounding out the dual, Tayler Wegner came up with a :58 win by fall over Dillan Belt to give Emmetsburg the 63-18 victory.

After the Bulldogs lost to Estherville Lincoln Central by a 27-46 tally in the second dual of the night, the Midgets squared off against Emmetsburg in the nightcap.

Wrestling began at 106 pounds in the dual with Brett Steinkamp earning a 1:10 win by fall over ELC’s Joel McCoy.

At 113 pounds, Alex Clark would fall victim to Cole Budach in a 2:36 pin to tie the dual score at 6-6.

Joey Lowman would receive a win by forfeit at 120 pounds and at 126, Nick Merwald earned a 13-1 major decision victory over Austin Egeland for a 16-6 E-Hawk lead.

Tyler Leuer earned a 3:04 win by fall over the Midgets’ Anthony Segura in action at 132 pounds before the E-Hawks forfeited to Blake Gjerde at 138 pounds.

Justin Studer would earn a 4:41 win by fall over Evan Howing in action at 145 pounds and at 152 pounds, Brady Bailey battled Aaron Howing to an 18-3 Technical Fall at the 4:32 mark of their match.

Nick Schany earned a 10-3 decision victory over Alex Blomquist in the 160 pound match and at 170 pounds, Andrew Wellik scored an 11-2 major decision over Lee Bates.

At 182 pounds, Tyler Henson was pinned in 5:40 of his match with Grant Lausen, but Tayler Wegner recorded a 5:43 win by fall over Cole Mace in the 195 pound match.

Tanner Dahm would come up short in a 7-2 decision at the hands of Chase Bonner at 220 pounds before Estherville Lincoln Central forfeited the 285 pound match to Andrew Garrelts to end the dual with th 52-21 final tally in favor of Emmetsburg.

The E-Hawks’ trip to the OA/BC-IG Invitational Tournament on Friday and Saturday was nixed due to weather, so Emmetsburg will wrap up its dual season tonight (Tuesday) at Pocahontas, in a double dual with the Pocahontas Area/Pomeroy-Palmer Indians and the Algona Bulldogs. Action is set for 6 p.m.

Then on Friday, the E-Hawks will travel to Spencer to wrestle in the Lakes Conference Tournament. Wrestling action will begin at 5 p.m.

The post season will begin on Saturday, Feb. 4, with the 1A Sectional at Okoboji High School. The Class 1A District meet will be wrestled on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Sibley-Ocheydan.

The State Tournament is set for Feb. 16-18.
