E-Hawks Crown Two Champs At Clear Lake

CLEAR LAKE The E-Hawk wrestlers collected a pair of individual championships at Saturday’s Clear Lake Invitational Tournament. Coach Jared Pickett’s grapplers collected a total of seven placings during the day’s outing.

Tayler Wegner and Andrew Garrelts would stand atop the winner’s podium at their respective weights of 195 and 285 pounds, while Brady Bailey would finish second at 152 pounds.

At 132 pounds, Caige Elbert would earn a fourth place finish, as would Justin Studer at 145 pounds. 106 pounder Brett Steinkamp would take fifth place and Nick Merwald would finish fifth at 126 pounds. Emmetsburg’s final wrestler, Tanner Dahm, would wrestle but did not earn a placing on the day.

For Wegner, a first round bye was followed by a 1:40 win by fall over Sterling Adams of Riceville/St. Ansgar in the semis before scoring a 9-5 decision win over Ryan Sharp of Charles City for the 195 pound crown.

Andrew Garrelts pinned his way through the tournament, starting with a :57 fall over Connor Eustice of Riceville/St. Ansgar and then scoring a 1:11 win by fall over Dalton Hamm of Charles City. For the championship, Garrelts needed just :19 to pin Alex Hermes of LeMars for the 285 title.

At 152 pounds, Brady Bailey opened with a 9-1 major decision over Marcus Uthe of Riceville/St. Ansgar and then earned a 3-2 decision over Connor Nosbish of Clear Lake to advance to the finals. Bailey would wrestle Cole Hoeft of Charles City for the title, but would come up short in a 5-3-decision loss to finish second.

Freshman Caige Elbert would start his day at 132 pounds with a 3:56 win by fall over Micah Laurenz of Algona. Elbert would then wrestle Adam Staudt of Charles City, but was pinned in :19 to drop into the consolation round. Meeting Carson Farmer of Clear Lake, Elbert scored a 3:38 win by fall to wrestle for third place, but meeting Rugby Sliger of Rockford-Rudd-Marble Rock, the E-Hawk would be pinned in 1:52 to finish fourth.

Senior Justin Studer started the day with a 4-0-decision win over Brad Bjustrom of Algona, but lost a 2-0 decision to Spencer Kelly of Rockford-Rudd-Marble Rock. In the consolation semi, Studer pinned Beau Sorenson of Forest City in 1:12, but in the third place match, Studer was pinned by Rylan Johnson of Riceville-St. Ansgar in 4:49 to place fourth at 145 pounds.

At 106 pounds, Brett Steinkamp started the day as the victim of a 1:47 fall at the hands of Andrew Mettry of Forest City, but came back in the consolation rounds with a 3:40 win by fall over Nate Manning of Charles City. Steinkamp would be pinned in :44 by Nick Madson of LeMars and in the fifth place match, Steinkamp would earn a 5:16 win by fall over Wyatt Portis of Rockford-Rudd-Marble Rock to place fifth.

Nick Merwald would lose a 16-0 technical fall in 4:47 to Jacob Page of Charles City to open at 126 pounds and drew a bye in the first consolation round. Merwald would then lose a 7-2 decision to Blake Kelso of Clear Lake. As there were only five wrestlers in the 126 pound bracket, Merwald was awarded fifth place honors.

Tanner Dahm, wrestling at 220 pounds, was pinned in 1:00 by Tyler Putney of Forest City in the opening round of the tournament. Dahm would wrestle Devon Winterink of Charles City in the first consolation round, but was pinned in 2:36 to end his tournament.
