Fouls Factor Into E-Hawks’ Overtime Loss
A difference of 13 free throws would spell the difference between victory and defeat for Emmetsburg’s E-Hawks Tuesday night. The E-Hawks would got to the line just five times as Spencer made 25 trips to the charity stripe in a 58-53 overtime victory over Emmetsburg in Lakes action.
The loss drops Emmetsburg to 1-2 in Lakes Conference play as they prepare to travel to Storm Lake Friday night.
The E-Hawks would struggle to get their shots to fall in the contest, as Spencer would take an early 14-11 lead after the opening quarter of play. The physical play would begin to take an early toll, but Emmetsburg battled with the Tigers to trail by a half-dozen, 27-21, at the halftime break.
In the third quarter, Emmetsburg made some key adjustments that got the offense on track, as the Tigers struggled with their game. The E-Hawks would catch Spencer and edge out to a 37-34 advantage at the end of the third frame.
But Spencer wouldn’t concede the issue and fought their way back to retake the lead at 49-47, but with :09 to go in regulation, Jake Carlson would hit a short jumper to knot the score at 49-49 to set up the 4:00 overtime period.
Spencer had received the benefit of several calls in regulation, going to the line 20 times in the first four quarters, and making nine of those shots, while Emmetsburg had five free throw opportunities and made just two.
The disparity in fouls would make itself well-known in the overtime as Jake Carlson would foul out quickly, putting Matthew Klemme on the line to can a pair of shots.
Austin Krause would answer with a put-back shot to tie the game at 51-51 with 3:23 to go in the extra period, but a foul by Marcus Akridge put Klemme on the line again, with the same result and a 53-51 Tiger lead.
The Tigers would get a quick trey on an E-Hawk miss and another pair of free throws by Klemme put Emmetsburg down 58-51.
But with :55 to go, Ryan Kliegl made a layup for a 58-53 tally, but after a timeout, the E-Hawks would get the ball back after a Spencer miss, only to see a three-pointer try by Kliegl bounce off the iron with :23 to go.
A foul on Jake Jackson at the other end saw Spencer miss both shots, but a late bucket would give the Tigers the 58-51 win.
Emmetsburg would get 15 points from Jake Jackson before he fouled out in the overtime period. Zach Overberg finished the night with 12 points, while Ryan Kliegl added 10 points. Jake Carlson scored eight points before fouling out in the overtime period, while Austin Krause came off the bench to add six points and Marcus Akridge added a pair of points.
