Grapplers Win League Opener On Criteria Over Cherokee

Emmetsburg’s E-Hawk wrestlers opened their Lakes Conference slate with a thrilling 40-39 win over Cherokee Thursday night. The win came on criteria after action ended in a 39-39 deadlock.

Emmetsburg also defeated Alta-Aurelia on Thursday night by a 52-36 margin in the second half of a double duel in Emmetsburg.

Against Cherokee, the duel would come down to Criteria H – first match points scored – to determine the final winner of the battle.

Starting at 152 pounds, Brady Baile lost a 4-2 decision to Zac Anderson. At 160, Joel Hoyman was pinned in :23 by Luke Zeiman and at 170, Tyler Henson was pinned in 2:31 by Blake Booth. The E-Hawks forfeited at 182 but at 195, Emmetsburg got on the scoreboard with a 1:52 win by fall as Tayler Wegner pinned Gabe Conley to make the score 21-6.

After forfeiting at 220, the E-Hawks got a 9-4 decision win from Andrew Garrelts over Miah Back at 285 pounds. Brett Steinkamp and Alex Clark received forfeits at 106 and 113 pounds to make the score 27-21.

Emmetsburg tied the match at 27-27 after the 120 pound match when Jacob Miller pinned Andy Pitts in :29, but at 126, Nick Merwald was pinned in 1:49 of his match with Hunter Morrow.

At 132 pounds, Tyler Leuer made his first mat appearance of the season and earned a forfeit win for a 33-33 score. Caige Elbert would be pinned in 2:57 of his 138 pound match against Jack Letsche, but at 145 pounds, Justin Studer came out and pinned Rick Weaver in 1:25 to knot the score at 39-39.

Meet official Dan Schrieber went to the rulebook and worked through the criteria to break a tie. There were not penalties, deducted points, both teams had an equal number of wins by fall and forfeit, as well as match wins.

That wold bring the final decision to first points scored in matches. The E-Hawks scored first in six matches, while Cherokee scored first in three, giving Emmetsburg the point and the 40-39 victory.

In the nightcap, the E-Hawks defeated Alta-Aurelia by a 52-36 score. Emmetsburg opened by forfeiting at 170 pounds and Tyler Henson received a forfeit win at 182. The E-Hawks forfeited at 195, but at 220, Tayler Wegner pinned Joe Rodriguez in :29 for a 12-12 team score.

Andrew Garrelts at 285, Brett Steinkamp at 106 and Alex Clark at 113 all received wins by forfeit before Jacob Miller was pinned in 1:26 of his 120 pound match with Jorge McDonald.

With a 30-18 lead, the E-Hawks got a 1:46 win by fall from Nick Merwald over Jon Michael Henry at 126 pounds and at 132, Tyler Leuer earned his first win of the season with a 16-6 major decision win over Taylor Steviks.

Caige Elbert was pinned in 3:51 of his 138 pound match by Cody Cameron, but at 145, Justin Studer tallied a 1:09 win by fall over Jared Schmitz.

At 152 pounds, Brady Bailey would earn a :28 win by fall over Junior Molina before the E-Hawks forfeited the 160 pound match for the 52-36 final.

The wins give Emmetsburg a 1-0 mark in Lakes Conference action and a 5-1 overall duel record.

Emmetsburg will take to the mat again this Thursday night, Dec. 15, when they travel to Spencer for a Lakes Conference double-duel at Spencer with the Tigers and the Wolfpack of Western Christian.

The E-Hawks will then close out the first half of their season on Saturday, Dec. 17, when they travel to Fort Dodge for the Fort Dodge Invitational Tournament.
