E-Hawk Wrestlers Open Campaign With Split
The wrestling campaign started with a split for the Emmetsburg E-Hawks on Thursday night. Coach Jared Pickett’s squad fell to a tough Forest City squad by a 47-28 score, but came back to defeat West Hancock by a 78-6 tally.
In the opening dual with Forest City, the E-Hawks picked up match victories from Tayler Wegner, Andrew Garrelts, Caige Elbert, Justin Studer and Nick Schany. At 195 pounds, Wegner tallied a 1:53 win by fall over Jake Staudt and a 285 pounds, Garrelts needed just :41 to tally a pin over Zach Laidig.
Freshman Caige Elbert got his first varsity win at 132 pounds with a 2:37 win by fall over Derrick Wubben, while senior Justin Studer pinned Beau Sorensen in 2:25 of their 145 pound contest. Nick Schany would round of the wins with a 13-4 major decision victory over Tyler Brock.
At 106 pounds, Brett Steinkamp was pinned in :46 by Andrew Mettry and at 113 pounds, Alex Clark fell victim to a 1:35 pin by Michael Messersmith.
Nick Merwald lost an 8-5 decision to David Orozco in action at 120 pounds and at 126 pounds, Jacob Miller was pinned in 1:45 by Taran Larson. Brady Bailey would come up short in a 12-5 decision to Nick Mitthum at 152 to close out the action, as the E-Hawks forfeited at 220 pounds, 138, 160 and 182 pounds for the 47-28 final score.
In the dual with West Hancock, the visiting Eagles surrendered seven forfeits out of their lineup to spot the E-Hawks 42 points, but were only able to score points from a forfeit by the E-Hawks at 220 pounds.
Andrew Garrelts opened the action with a 3:38 win by fall over Kevin Tlach in the 285 pound match and at 106, Brett Steinkamp earned a 1:38 win by fall over Logan Brown.
At 126 pounds, Jacob Miller needed just :30 to pin Hunter Hiscocks and Justin Studer scored a 1:23 win by fall over Klayton Lamoreaux in the 145 pound match.
Brady Bailey scored a 3:16 win by fall over Drew Redenius in action at 160 and at 195 pounds, Tayler Wegner earned a 3:16 win by fall over Nathan Aitchison.
Alex Clark at 113, Nick Merwald at 120, Caige Elbert at 132, Shay Mortenson at 138, Wes Brennan at 152, Tyler Henson at 170 and Nick Schany at 182 all received forfeit wins for the 78-6 final tally.
