Lady E-Hawks Collect Victory In Regular Season Opener
POCAHONTAS – After playing a full scrimmage game a week earlier, Emmetsburg’s Lady E-Hawks were ready to get their regular season underway. Coach John Kennedy’s squad opened their campaign in positive fashion Tuesday, defeating the Maidens of Pocahontas Area/Pomeroy-Palmer by a 38-28 tally.
The Thanksgiving holiday layoff was evident as both teams struggled to find the bucket in the opening quarter Tuesday night, but Emmetsburg struggled the most in the first eight minutes, trailing the host Maidens by a 7-3 tally after one quarter of play.
The break between quarters seemed to be just what Emmetsburg needed to regroup, however, as the defense would turn up the pressure and the offense was able to break the Maidens’ press to outscore PAC/PP by an 11-4 tally in the quarter for a 14-11 lead at the intermission.
Emmetsburg continued to hold off the Maidens in the third frame, maintaining the three-point lead through the quarter for a 24-21 advantage to start the final quarter of play.
The offense continued to work for good shots and got the shots to fall in the final eight minutes of action to slowly edge away from the Maidens until they were able to post the 10-point, 38-28 margin of victory at the final buzzer.
Senior Faith Schmidt would hold the hot hand of the offense with a 12 point effort for Emmetsburg. Paige Naig would add eight points to the tally, while Justine Kummer and Kaity Degen both added a half-dozen points to the scoreboard.
Hadley Egland and Alexa Naig would round out Emmetsburg’s scoring work with two points each in the victorious effort.
Emmetsburg will now prepare to open the Lakes Conference campaign next Tuesday night, Dec. 6, when they will play host to Estherville Lincoln Central .Varsity game tip off is set for 6:15 p.m. in the EHS?gym.
