Lady E-Hawk Netters Observe “Pink Out” Night

The Lady E-Hawks donned pink on Thursday to battle Breast Cancer in their annual Pink Out Game against Cancer. Former Lady E-Hawk Teresa Joyce Alesch, who is currently fighting cancer, was the special guest of the evening. Emmetsburg’s Lady E-Hawks put forth a great fight, just like their cause, in Friday’s “Pink Out” night volleyball match against Storm Lake, but ended up on the wrong side of a 3-1 decision. Game scores were 19-25, 20-25, 26-24 and 20-25.

As part of the evening’s observance, the senior athletes in the volleyball and cross-country programs were also honored before a large crowd. Athletes honored were volleyball players Jayme Penrod and Paige Naig, along with cross-country runners Kristi Wurzer, Zach Overberg, Chad Loomis, Max Jones, Dan Pelzer and Marcel Pohlmann.

The pink-clad crowd also turned out for the Lady E-Hawks’ annual fundraiser for breast cancer research. Former Emmetsburg volleyball player and graduate Teresa Joyce Alesch, who is currently battling cancer, was honored by the team and also performed the National Anthem to begin the match.

Emmetsburg had a good night at the service line, making 94 percent of their serves. Jayme Penrod paced the squad making 21 of 21 serves with six aces, while Alexa Naig added 18 of 19 service completions. Shelby Brindley connected on 16 of 17 serve attempts with four aces and Britni Will added 11 of 13 serves. Paige Naig completed 10 of 11 serves and Miranda Vlasman added 10 of 10 serves with one ace to the effort.

At the net, Paige Naig would make 30 of 31 hits with 11 kills, while Jacque Carlson added 19 of 24 hits with six kills. Jayme Penrod made 19 of 22 hits with six kills and Miranda Vlasman came away with 19 of 21 hits with three kills to her credit. Shelby Brindley added five of eight hits with a kill and Alexa Naig had five of six hits with a kill.

Shelby Brindley and Paige Naig both assisted on two blocks, while Jacque Carlson and Alexa Naig each assisted on a block.

Jayme Penrod would come up with 19 digs in the contest, with Miranda Vlasman digging out 11 shots. Paige Naig made eight digs and Britni Will dug out seven shots, with Alexa Naig adding four digs. Shelby Brindley had three digs and Jacque Carlson dug out one shot.

Shelby Brindley would dish out 15 set assists to her teammates and Alexa Naig added nine helpers to the effort.
