By Staff | Oct 13, 2011

Emmetsburg’s E-Hawk Junior Varsity has a perfect 6-0 mark on the season after wins over Western Christian of Hull and Storm Lake.

In their contest with Western Christian on Sept. 26, Coach Dave Fog’s E-Hawks claimed a 40-6 victory over the Wolfpack at Hull.

In the first quarter, Allen Jensen would cap off the opening E-Hawk drive with a 10-yard run for a touchdown and quarterback Brandon Elbert added the conversion run for an 8-0 lead at the end of the first frame.

Emmetsburg would strike again in the second quarter as Jensen found the end zone from four yards out and ran in his own conversion to make the score 16-0 early in the period. But Western Christian would take the ball and use up the clock in the rest of the quarter to engineer a drive to cut the E-Hawk lead to 16-6 at the intermission.

Emmetsburg started slowly in the second half, but Aaron Bird would spark the E-hawks when he broke loose on a counter play and raced 58 years for a touchdown. Brandon Elbert kept the ball for the conversion and a 24-6 advantage over the Wolfpack.

The lead would hold through the rest of the third frame and in the fourth quarter, Brady Christensen gave the offense another spark with his 50-yard romp for a touchdown. Elbert would add the conversion run to make the score 32-6 as the defense took over.

Western Christian would have possessions halted twice as Brady Christensen and shay Mortenson would both intercept passes in the final quarter and the E-Hawks would put the icing on the victory cake with Jensen running in from seven yards out for the final score after adding the conversion for the 40-6 final.

“This was a hard fought win for the team,” noted Coach Fog. “We learned we need to keep consistent effort throughout the game and continue to work on our passing game and quick-side execution. But, all in all, the team finished very strongly!”

Emmetsburg would rack of 373 yards of rushing in the contest without any passing yardage. Aaron Bird ran for 137 yards and Allen Jensen rushed for 117 yards, while Brady Christensen added 79 yards and Brandon Elbert chipped in 62 yards.

On defense, Shay Mortenson and Brady Christensen both intercepted passes for the E-Hawk defense.

On Oct. 3, the E-Hawks made the trip to Storm Lake and shellacked the Tornadoes by a 60-6 tally.

On the opening drive of the game, Brandon Elbert kept the ball and scored off a 65-yard run and added his own conversion for a quick, 8-0 lead.

On their next possession, Emmetsburg turned to Brady Christensen as the fullback broke loose on a trap play and outran the defense for a 45 yard score. The conversion play failed, giving the E-Hawks a 14-0 advantage.

The defense got in its licks, as Aaron Bird blocked a Storm Lake punt and then picked up the loose ball and raced into the end zone from eight yards out to score. Bird would cap off the run with a two-point conversion to give Emmetsburg a 22-0 lead at the end of the first stanza.

Allen Jensen got his name in the stat book in the second quarter as he scored off a 27 yard run and after Brady Christensen’s conversion run, the lead was 30-0 with plenty of time to go in the second quarter.

Shay Mortenson would pick off a Storm Lake pass on their next possession to set up another E-Hawk score, as Brandon Elbert would fire a shot downfield to Christensen for a 35 yards scoring strike. The conversion failed, making the score 36-0.

Storm Lake would take over and tried to convert a fourth down deep in their own backyard, but the E-Hawk defense stepped up to stop the Tornadoes and get the ball back on downs. With the ball in excellent field position, all it took was a 12-yard run by Allen Jensen to score, and with Aaron Bird’s conversion run, Emmetsburg led 44-0 at the half-time break.

With the clock running continuously in the second half, Emmetsburg’s offense went to the aerial mode, with Elbert making several completions to Austin Krause and Allen Jensen to set up a touchdown. Aaron Bird would run in from five yards out and then ran in the conversion for a 52-0 lead.

After stopping Storm Lake on the ensuing possession, the E-Hawks took over again and this time, Tyler Henson got the ball and ran in from two yards away for the score. Brandon Elbert added the conversion for a 60-0 lead.

Storm Lake would manage to score as time was running out, but Brady Christensen would block the conversion kick for the 60-6 final score.

Allen Jensen would rack up 153 yards in the win and Aaron Bird added 104 yards to the cause, while Brady Christensen added 77 yards and Brandon Elbert rushed for 22 yards.

Brandon Elbert completed four of five passing attempts for 101 yards with one touchdown and one conversion pass, giving the E-Hawks a total of 476 yards of offense in the win.

Defensively, Shay Mortenson intercepted a pass and Joel Hoyman recovered a fumble.
