District Play Continues Against South O’Brien

By Staff | Sep 22, 2011

With the district campaign in full swing for the Emmetsburg E-Hawks, the slate of opponents doesn’t get any easier by anyones stretch of the imagination.

After a pair of district wins over Sioux Central and Pocahontas Area/Pomeroy-Palmer, Emmetsburg now enters the heart of the district schedule with a road trip to Paullina and the den of the South O’Brien Wolverines.

“They have, by far, the best offensive and defensive line that we’ve seen so far this season,” noted Emmetsburg Head Coach Mike Dunlap. “Offensively, they have the number two-leading rusher in the state in Class 1A in their backfield.”

The Wolverines have had their share of tough games so far this season, including last week’s one-point 21-20 overtime loss to West Lyon.

“They are a very athletic team overall,”?Dunlap noted. “They have great team size and quickness all the way around.”

According to the E-Hawk coach, South O’Brien will operate offensively out of the Wing I?formation, and work out of veer and unbalanced sets with twins. On defense, look for the Wolverines to come out in a 5/2 or 5/2-over alignment to counter the E-Hawk running game.

“For us, we need to continued to become a good road team,”?Dunlap said. “We need to get off to a good start on special teams, on offense and on defense every time we go out on the field.”

Emphasizing again that the Wolverines have a lot of size in their roster and speed to go with the size, Dunlap knows what the E-Hawks need to accomplish on Friday night.

“We need to go into the game with great focus, great effort and great discipline on every play,” Dunlap said. “We have to continued to be a focused, disciplined football team in every aspect of our game.”

Kickoff time for Friday’s game in Paullina will be 7 p.m.
