Lady E-Hawk Players Earn All State Honors
A pair of Emmetsburg’s Lady E-Hawk softball players were named to the Iowa Softball Coaches Association’s All State Teams last week in recognition of their play during the 2011 season.
Lady E-Hawk pitcher Faith Schmidt and first baseman Morgan Vlasman were honored by the state’s softball coaches with their selection to the Class 2A All State Teams late last week.
Schmidt, a junior for Coach Travis Birkey, was named to the Class 2A First Team squad as a pitcher. During the season, Schmidt appeared in 30 games, starting in the circle in 27 of those contests, and amassed a record of 23-6 for the year. Schmidt sported a 0.96 Earned Run Average as she walked 32 batters while striking out 268 batters, hitting five and allowing 88 hits with 41 runs and just 24 runs earned. Schmidt also made seven putouts, committed three errors and had a fielding percentage of .951.
On offense, Faith was also a threat as she batted 99 times and scored 14 runs off 33 hits with eight doubles, a triple and three home runs, while batting in 32 runs. She was walked 10 times, struck out 14 times and issued five sacrifices to earn a .400 On-base percentage, a .525 Slugging percentage and a batting average of .333.
Senior Morgan Vlasman was accorded Honorable Mention status on the Class 2A All State Team for her play at first base over her career with the Lady E-Hawks.
Vlasman played in all 35 of Emmetsburg’s games this past season, and went to the plate 105 times during the season, where she scored 30 runs off 35 hits, with six doubles, a triple, three home runs and 25 runs batted in. Vlasman also drew 14 walks, was struck out 27 times and issued five sacrifices, as well as stealing three bases to earn an On-base percentage of :426 and a slugging percentage of .495 with a batting average of .333 for the season.
Morgan was a defensive force for the Lady E-Hawks, making 218 pound outs at first base while committing just two errors on the season for a .991 Fielding percentage to close out her prep career for Coach Travis Birkey and the Lady E-Hawks.
