Boys Of Summer Earn Post-Season Recognition

A trio of Emmetsburg E-Hawks earned post-season honors for their play on the diamond this season.

Sophomore Jake Jackson and Senior Bobby Gappa both earned honors on the 2011 Lakes Conference All Conference teams, while Junior Ryan Kliegl was named to the 2011 Class 2A Northwest All District Team for his play. The honors were accorded following voting by the Lakes Conference coaches and member coaches of the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association.

Jake Jackson earned First Team Honors on the Lakes Conference elite squad. Jackson batted 43 times during the season and tallied 16 hits and scored six runs while tallying 10 RBI’s. He came away with three doubles while drawing two walks and striking out 10 times to bat .372 for the E-Hawks, Jackson was the shortstop for the E-Hawks, and earned one of the First Team infielder’s roster positions.

Senior teammate Bobby Gappa was accorded honorable mention status on the Lakes Conference All Conference Team. One of two seniors on the E-Hawk squad, Gappa held down second base with occasional duty in the outfield, and in 38 at-bats, scored one run off 11 hits, with six RBI’s with one double, while drawing three walks and striking out nine times to bat .289 for Coach Mike Brennan’s ballclub.

Junior Ryan Kliegl earned selection to the Class 2A Northwest All District Second Team following balloting by the member coaches of the IBCA. Kliegl earned one of the outfield spots on the honor team.

In 56 at-bats, Kliegl had 21 hits and scored 24 runs with 11 RBI’s to his credit. He tallied three doubtless and a pair of home run shots during the season, with 17 walks and 10 strikeouts to bat .375.

In addition, Kliegl set a new Emmetsburg High School record for stolen bases, with 35, eclipsing the previous record of 25, which was set by Joey Wollum in 1999.

Emmetsburg concluded the 2011 baseball season with a final mark of 0-14 in the Lakes Conference and 5-19 overall.
