Lady Wolverines’ Close Out Postseason Campaign
WEST?BEND – The post season trail for the Lady Wolverines of West Bend-Mallard came to a close Monday night after a pair of wins in the opening rounds of Class 1A tourney play.
After defeating Graettinger/Terril on July 6 by a 17-5 decision, the Lady Wolverines earned a 4-0 win over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on Friday in the Regional quarterfinal to advance into a semi-final matchup with West Lyon on Monday night.
However, the semi-final matchup with the Wildcats would prove to be the end of the trail for the Lady Wolverines as they fell by a 2-1 score to end their season with a final mark of 26-10.
Friday’s quarterfinal game with Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn saw the Lady Wolverines dominate the game, played at Emmetsburg. After playing through two scoreless innings, WBM opened the third inning with a pair of outs, but a single by Courtney Bargman would start things rolling. An error on Jessica Abrahamson’s at-bat put her on base as Bargman moved to third on an overthrow, and then came home on an over throw before Wendy Grimm got base off an error that scored courtesy Runner Lauren Thatcher for a 2-0 lead.
Grimm would scamper home when Sarah Mader got a hold of a pitch and drove it deep into right field for an RBI?double before the at-bat ended.
The Lady Wolverines would protect the lead zealously through the rest of the third inning, and then battled HMS through the fourth, fifth and sixth innings with an exchange of outs and solid defense, led by McKenzie Grimm in the circle.
In the top of the seventh, McKenzie Grimm led off with a put out for the first out. Courtney Bargman nailed her second hit of the game and stole second before Jessica Abrahamson added a single that would score pinch runner Harrison Schmidt.
Wendy Grimm would follow with a base hit of her own as courtesy runner Lauren Thatcher moved to second, but Sarah Mader hit a fly ball to center field for the second out, only to see Thatcher called out by the umpires for leaving too early on the fly ball, ending the Lady Wolverines’ at-bat.
It was time for the defense to shine in the bottom of the inning and despite a leadoff single, the runner was put out on a fielders’ choice where Ashleigh Gambell put the leadoff runner out on her way to second.
A walk would put runners on first and second, but Gambell would relay a grounder to Mader at first for out number two and a strikeout by McKenzie Grimm would end the game in the 4-0 win for the purple and gold.
Grimm got the win, allowing just three hits with nine strikeouts and one walk.
West Bend-Mallard got a double and single from Sarah Mader, while Courtney Bargman added a pair of hits to the tally. Jessica Abrahamson and Wendy Grimm rounded out the hitting for the Lady Wolverines in the win.
The task was a little harder on Monday, as the Lady Wolverines fell to West Lyon by a 2-1 tally in a contest at Hartley. The hits were few and far between for the Lady Wolverines, as they only garnered four hits. McKenzie Grimm and Courtney Bargman each collected two hits in the season ending matchup, with Bargman providing the RBI single that scored Grimm for?West Bend-Mallard’s only run of the contest.
McKenzie Grimm would be tagged with the loss, as she allowed two runs, one earned, off seven hits with nine strikeouts.
