Lady E-Hawks Blank Spencer, Down WBM

SPENCER – With less than two weeks to go in the regular season, Emmetsburg’s Lady E-Hawks picked up a pair of wins to close out last week on the softball diamond. On Thursday, Emmetsburg claimed a 5-0 shutout over Spencer in Lakes Conference play and then dealt West Bend-Mallard a 7-2 setback in a non-conference tilt on Friday night to improve to 17-5 overall and 8-1 in league play.

After two rainouts on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, the Lady E-Hawks shook off any rust on Thursday at Spencer with their very first at-bat. Shortstop Aly Berven led off by taking Amy McLaury’s first pitch of the ballgame over the outfield fence for a leadoff home run and Emmetsburg never looked back. After being retired in order after the solo blast, the Lady E-Hawks put on a little defense of their own as pitcher Faith Schmidt struck the Tigers out in order in the bottom of the first frame.

Miranda Vlasman led off the second for the Lady E-Hawks with a single and came around to score off a single from Tegan Olson with two outs, but Olson would be left waiting when the at-bat ended. Spencer would draw a walk in the second but left their runner stranded to face a 2-0 deficit after two innings.

Aly Berven led off the third with a walk and was joined on base by Faith Schmidt off an error with one out. After a strikeout for the second out, Berven and courtesy runner Kendall Deitering would score off Miranda Vlasman’s three-run home run shot before the at-bat ended.

With Emmetsburg holding a 5-0 lead, the Tigers would get a base hit in the bottom of the third but couldn’t do anything with the runner to end the inning.

Emmetsburg would get a single from Whitney Kibbie to lead off the fourth inning and was followed on base by Tegan Olson with a single. An error on Kaity Degen’s at-bat would load the bases before Kibbie was put out at home on a fielder’s choice on Aly Berven’s at-bat.

Olson, Degen and Berven would be left waiting, however, when Hillary Pico was struck out and Faith Schmidt hit a fly ball to end the at-bat.

Spencer went down in order in the bottom of the inning to trail 5-0 to start the fifth inning.

Emmetsburg got a leadoff single from Morgan Vlasman, but Vlasman would be thrown out to end the at-bat after a pair of fly outs.

Spencer would get a runner on base off an infield error in the bottom of the fifth, but left the runner waiting to end the frame.

The Lady E-Hawks went down in order in the sixth, but returned the favor to Spencer in their half of the inning. in the top of the seventh, two quick outs started the inning, but Schmidt got on base off a fielders’ choice, before the at-bat ended. Spencer would go down in order in their half of the seventh to end the game.

Faith Schmidt got the win, giving up one hit with one walk and striking out 12 batters. For the Lady E-Hawks, Miranda Vlasman had a home run and single, while Aly Berven added a solo homer. Tegan Olson had two hits, while Whitney Kibbie and Morgan Vlasman added base hits to the effort.

Friday night the Lady E-Hawks journeyed to West Bend to take on the Lady Wolverines of West Bend-Mallard and earned a 7-2 win on the road.

Emmetsburg went down in order in the top of the first and West Bend-Mallard struck quickly, scoring two runs in their half of the inning. McKenzie Grimm would draw a walk and came around to score off a single by Courtney Bargman, who would score her run off an error on Jessica Abrahamson’s at-bat, but Abrahamson was stranded when the Lady Wolverines were retired in order after that point.

Trailing 2-0, Emmetsburg would get a single from Morgan Vlasman to lead off the second, but left her stranded. WBM got a single from Mackenzie Banwart to lead off the bottom of the second, but left her waiting as well as the Emmetsburg defense settled in to end the inning.

The Lady E-Hawks went down in order in the top of the third, but Emmetsburg returned the favor to the Lady Wolverines to end the third frame.

In the top of the fourth, Emmetsburg found its offense. Hillary Pico led off with a walk and moved off an error on Faith Schmidt’s at-bat. A single by Morgan Vlasman was followed by a fielders’ choice on Miranda Vlasman’s at bat scored Pico but put courtesy runner Alexa Naig out at second. A double by Jayme Penrod scored Morgan Vlasman and a single from Whitney Kibbie scored Miranda Vlasman and Penrod came home as well before a sacrifice by Tegan Olson allowed Kibbie to cross the plate. With two outs, Kaity Degen rapped out a single but was stranded when Berven hit a fly ball to end the at-bat.

Now trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth, West Bend-Mallard got a single with one out from Ashley Schmidt, but she was left waiting when Mackenzie Banwart and Harrison Schmidt were struck out to end the inning.

With a 5-2 lead in hand, Emmetsburg had a little breathing room to start the fifth inning. Hillary Pico led off with a single and was followed on base by Faith Schmidt. Morgan Vlasman hit an infield fly for the first out, and a fielders’ choice on Miranda Vlasman’s at-bat put Pico out at third base. With two away, a single from Jayme Penrod brought courtesy runner Alexa Naig over the plate to put Emmetsburg up 6-2 when Whitney Kibbie fouled out to Jessica Abrahamson to end the at-bat.

The Lady Wolverines led off with a walk for Ashleigh Gambell to start the bottom of the fifth, but she would be picked off on a fly ball to first base from McKenzie Grimm and a put out of Courtney Bargman ended the inning with no change in the score.

Emmetsburg would go down with two quick outs of Olson and Degan to start the sixth frame, but Aly Berven pulled out a single, only to be left waiting at first when Hillary Pico flew out.

West Bend-Mallard would go down in order in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Emmetsburg defense tightened up to protect the 6-2 lead to start the final inning.

In the top of the seventh, Emmetsburg led off with Faith Schmidt rapped out a single and saw her courtesy runner, Alexa Naig, move around the bases after a base hit from Miranda Vlasman with one out. A fielders’ choice on Jayme Penrod’s at-bat put Vlasman out at second, but Naig was able to score her run.

Whitney Kibbie added a base hit to join Penrod on base, but the two Lady E-Hawks would be left perched at first and second when Tegan Olson hit an infield fly to end the opportunity.

Staring at a five-run deficit, the Lady Wolverines faced a strong challenge in the bottom of the seventh, but would be retired in order to end the game in the 7-2 loss.

Faith Schmidt earned the win in the circle, as she allowed two runs off three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Emmetsburg got a double and single from Jayme Penrod, while Whitney Kibbie, Morgan Vlasman and Faith Schmidt all had two hits. Aly Berven, Hillary Pico, Miranda Vlasman and Kaity Degen all added a base hit each.

For West Bend-Mallard, McKenzie Grimm took the loss, giving up seven runs, six earned, off 12 hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

For the Lady Wolverines, Courtney Bargman, Ashley Schmidt and MacKenzie Banwart all tallied base hits in the contest.

With the setback, West Bend-Mallard slips to 18-7 overall on the season.
