Almost – But Not Quite
Things were looking good for Emmetsburg’s E-Hawks in the bottom of the fourth inning against Newell-Fonda Tuesday night. The E-Hawks had stuck right with the Mustangs and had taken a 6-4 lead in the contest when Mother Nature intervened.
A heavy rain forced the suspension of the contest, and officials are trying to figure out a date to complete the game, if possible.
The Mustangs plated a pair of runs in the top of the first off a base hit and a wild pitch, but Emmetsburg came back to tie the game when Brady Berkland and Ryan Kliegl both scored after being walked. A fielders’ choice on Tyler Henderson’s at-bat scored Berkland and a single by Tayler Wegner would bring Kliegl home, but left Jake Carlson and Wegner’s courtesy runner, Aaron Bird, stranded.
The Mustangs added a run in the second, but Joe Jackson would score off a sacrifice by Kliegl to tie the game again.
Newell-Fonda plated a run in the top of the third off a double, but in the bottom of the third, the E-Hawks pushed three runs over the plate, as Henderson, Carlson, Wegner, Bobby Gappa and Luke Jackson rapped out five straight base hits to score runners Brady Christensen, Jacob Kibbie and Aaron Bird for a 6-4 lead.
The Mustangs stranded a runner in the fourth and Ryan Kliegl had drawn a walk before the rains came, washing out the game.
Emmetsburg was slated to host Estherville Lincoln Central Wednesday night and then travel to Algona High School on Thursday to finish out their week.
