Lady E-Hawks Fall At NSK/AR

SWEA?CITY – Emmetsburg’s Lady E-Hawks suffered their first loss of the season Thursday night to the fifth-ranked North Sentral-Kossuth/Armstrong-Ringsted ballclub by a 5-4 score.

Emmetsburg trailed most of the contest as they were held scoreless through five innings on Thursday night.

After stranding Hillary Pico in the first, the Lady E-Hawks went on the defensive in the bottom of the first. After getting a quick put out, NSK/AR got a base hit and then put a runner on base off an error. A fielders’ choice loaded the bases before Kirsten Adams stepped in and took a Faith Schmidt offering over the fence for a Grand Slam to put NSK/AR up 4-0.

The two teams would trade at-bats and outs through the next three innings, and Emmetsburg would got down in order in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, NSK/AR led off with a walk and managed to score a run off a pair of sacrifices and a base hit to take a 5-0 lead.

Leading off the top of the sixth inning, Emmetsburg had its’ work cut out for it. Aly Berven led off with a single and was followed by Hillary Pico with a walk. A double from Morgan Vlasman scored Berven and a double from Schmidt brought Pico home.

Trailing 5-2, Jayme Penrod and Miranda Vlasman tallied fly outs putting Emmetsburg down two outs. But, Whitney Kibbie stepped up and belted a single to score both Morgan Vlasman and Schmidt, but designated hitter Jacque Carlson struck out to end the rally.

NSK/AR managed a walk in their half of the sixth to set up the deciding seventh inning. Kaity Degen would lead off the top of the seventh for Emmetsburg striking out on a called third strike and Berven would also strike out.

Hillary Pico kept the hopes alive with a single and Morgan Vlasman drew a walk, but Faith Schmidt hit an infield popup to the first baseman to end the game in the 5-4 loss for Emmetsburg.

Schmidt would give up five runs off five hits with eight strikeouts and two walks in the loss.

Morgan Vlasman and Schmidt both had doubles, while Kibbie had two hits and Berven and Pico each tallied one hit.

Emmetsburg played at Pocahontas on Tuesday and travels to Storm Lake tonight (Wednesday) for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
