E-Hawks Open Season With Setback

ALGONA – The boys of summer opened their season with a tough, 5-4 loss to Bishop Garrigan in baseball action Tuesday night at Algona.

With Emmetsburg playing its first game of the season and the Golden Bears their second, the contest was evenly matched to start out. Both teams went down in order in the first inning, but in the top of the second, Emmetsburg drew first blood as Jake Carlson led off with a walk and courtesy runner Jacob Kibbie worked his way around the basepaths to score off a sacrifice RBI from Jon Leuer for a 1-0 Emmetsburg lead. Bishop Garrigan went down in order in their half of the inning for a 1-0 score after two complete.

The E-Hawks would add another score in the top of the third after Brady Berkland came home on a wild pitch. Bobby Gappa and Tyler Henderson would be left waiting when the at-bat ended. Bishop Garrigan would get a run back, but left two stranded to close the frame with a 2-1 score.

The E-Hawks went down in order in the fourth and the Golden Bears stranded two runners to end the fourth.

Emmetsburg came back in the top of the fifth to post two more runs. Brady Christensen got on off an error and would score off a wild pitch, while Brady Berkland drew a walk and also came home from a wild pitch. However, Tyler Henderson was once again left waiting when the inning ended.

Bishop Garrigan got one run back in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 4-2 to start the sixth frame. Emmetsburg would get a lead-off single from starting pitcher Tayler Wegner, but courtesy runner Greg Wesley and Joe Jackson were left waiting. The Golden Bears went down in order to end the sixth.

Emmetsburg opened the seventh with a base hit from Henderson, but three-quick outs ended the opportunity.

Bishop Garrigan came up and managed to earn three runs off four hits to take the 5-4 win.

Taylor Wegner took the loss, allowing five runs off five hits while striking out 10 batters. The E-Hawks had three hits in the effort.
