This week’s running of the Drake Relays, or “America’s Athletic Classic,” as it is billed, will be of special interest for Emmetsburg sports fans. Emmetsburg’s Lady E-Hawk track team will be represented in the Drake Relays on Friday, April 29 by the 4×100 relay team.

The relay, which is comprised of Jayme Penrod, Jordan Kerber, Nicole Leuer and Morgan Vlasman, were notified on Saturday that they had qualified to compete in the Drake Relays.

“The girls qualified 79th out of 80 teams in the state to run in the 4×100 prelims on Friday,”?noted Emmetsburg Head Girls Track Coach Dan Dooley. “Their qualifying time was :53.36, which they ran at the Earlybird meet we hosted back on April 5.”

The 102nd Annual Drake Relays begin officially on Wednesday of this week with open class and college and university competitions. High school athletes will also take to the famous blue Jim Duncan Track at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, starting on Friday.

“This is a great experience for these girls,”?Dooley noted. “There are three seniors and a junior in the relay and running in the Drake Relays is just going to serve to motivate them for the rest of the season.”

The high school girls 4×100 competition is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday, with 10 heats to run to determine the finals field for Saturday’s Championship. Emmetsburg will run in lane seven in the tenth heat of the event.

“I couldn’t be happier for these girls,”?Dooley said. “Once they’ve run on the blue track, they’ll drive harder to get back on the blue oval for state.”
