Former Resident Honored
A former Emmetsburg resident and alumni was recently honored by the Iowa High School Athletic Assocation. Bob Sweeney, who now resides in Atlantic, was honored at the 2011 Boys State Basketball Tournament with an Outstanding Service award.
Sweeney,a native of Cylinder, graduated from Emmetsburg in 1969, where he participated and lettered in five sports during high school: football, basketball, track, golf and baseball. He was also very active in student government. After a year at Emmetsburg JC, where he lettered in basketball and baseball, he transferred to NWMSU in Maryville, MO. Sweeney was a member of three Bearcat basketball teams and earned a BSE in Business Management. Upon graduation in 1973, he worked for Union Carbide Corporation before taking a teaching and coaching position in Indianola.
Bob taught and coached for 18 years at Indianola, Shenandoah and Charles City. In 1993 he began a successful administrative career serving as principal at Greene for two years and served the Atlantic School District for thirteen years as Assistant Principal/Activities Director. He served in many leadership roles for the IHSADA and was President of the organization in 2005-2006. He was honored as AD of the Year in 2007 and selected to the IHSADA in 2009.
