Radier Girls Fall At MMC
MARCUS – The post season came to a hard close for Ruthven-Ayrshire Tuesday night in a 45-63 loss to Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn in Class 1A Regional quarterfinal play. The loss ends Ruthven-Ayrshire’s season with a mark of 7-15.
After a surprise 47-42 win over Clay Central-Everly in the tournament opener last Thursday, the Raider girls were the decided underdog in Tuesday’s matchup, having lost to MMC’s Eagles earlier in the season.
On Tuesday, the Eagles got out to an early 19-6 lead over Ruthven-Ayrshire at the end of the first quarter, but Ruthven-Ayrshire would outscore MMC during the second quarter by a 12-8 tally to cut the lead to 10 points and trail 28-18 at the halftime break.
But Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn would come out of the locker room firing on all cylinders in the third quarter. The Eagles reeled off 14 unanswered points to open the second half before the Raiders could get their offense on track. The Raiders were outscored 20-8 in the third frame to trail 48-26 at the end of the quarter.
Ruthven-Ayrshire would try to put a run of sorts on the Eagles in the final quarter of the contest, outscoring Marcus-Meriden- Cleghorn by a 19-15 margin in the frame, but it was a case of too little-too late, as the Eagles persevered for the 63-45 final tally.
Turnovers hampered Ruthven-Ayrshire in the contest, as they committed 25 miscues in the game against just 12 for the Eagles.
Sadie Forey led RA with 23 points, while Alesha Sikora and Marly Bakken both had seven points. Keely Williamson would add five points to the effort and Shyanne Zaragoza chipped in three points.
The Raiders connected on 13 of 36 shots from the field and made 13 of 17 free throws in the effort, including seven of eight shots from the charity stripe in the final quarter.
