Knights Earn District Qualifications
MILFORD – The Graettinger/Terril Knights won Saturday’s Class 1A Sectional meet in Milford with 181.5 total points and advanced eight wrestlers to the 1A District meet Saturday at Sibley-Ocheyedan.
The Knights had three champions and six runners-up, but one grappler had to withdraw early this week and will not advance to the District. Earning championships were Tyler Dalen at 103 pounds, Austin Thompson at 112 and Nate Howard at 215 pounds. Qualifying to advance after earning runner-up finishes were Tyler Manning at119, Conner Tonderum at 125, Ty Gibson at 130, Trent Lundgren at 135, Heath Marchand at 140 and Ryan Schany at 145 pounds.
Each of the G/T Champions wrestled just one match in the brackets on Saturday. Dalen defeated Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Brent Reed with a 2:39 fall at 103, while Thompson earned a 1:38 fall over Okoboji’s Colby Kraninger in the 112 pound match, while Howard defeated Hartley-Melvin-Sanborne’s Josh Treybal with a 1:58 pin at 215 pounds.
At 125, Connor Tonderum defeated James Dubbelde of West Lyon, but lost to Heath Nagel of HMS. He then defeated Austin Dunnick in a wrestleback to finish second.
Ty Gibson defeated A.J. Huebner of HMS before losing to Justin Studer of Emmetsburg/RA in the finals to finish second at 130 pounds.
In the 135 pound weight bracket, Trent Lundgren defeated Tyler Pearson of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn before losing to Steven Brockshus of S-O to finish in second place.
Heath Marchand returned to the Knights’ lineup at 140 pounds with wins over Phillip Conrad of West Lyon and Tyler Reck of S/O before he lost to Skyler Rice of Emmetsburg to place second.
At 145, Ryan Schany defeated Emmetsburg’s Brady Bailey, but lost to Matt Finch of HMS in the finals to earn his runner-up finish.
The Knights also got a second place finish at 119 pounds, as Tyler Manning earned a semi-final win over Zach Sauers of West Lyon before losing to Nick Drenth of HMS in the finals to finish second. However, Manning was forced to withdraw from the District lineup early this week, and will not wrestle for the Knights on Saturday.
The top two finishers in each weight class on Saturday at the District earn the right to advance to the 2011 State Wrestling Championships that begin on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
