E-Hawks Advance Five To District, Earn Sectional Runner-Up Honors
MILFORD – The road to the State Wrestling Tournament began Saturday at the Class 1A Sectional tournament at Okoboji. For the Emmetsburg/Ruthven-Ayrshire E-Hawks, five wrestlers advanced to the 1A District meet this Saturday, and the entire team qualified for tonight’s (Tuesday’s) Class 1A Regional Team Duals by virtue of a second place finish at the Sectional.
The E-Hawks earned three titles on Saturday and a pair of runner-up finishes at the Sectional meet to advance to the District, which will be wrestled at Sibley-Ocheyedan High School on Feb. 12.
Winning Sectional titles for Emmetsburg/RA were Justin Studer at 130 pounds, Skyler Rice at 140 pounds and Tayler Wegner at 189 pounds.
Austin McCartan would finish second at 160 pounds to advance and at 171 pounds, Nick Schany had to win a wrestle-back match to qualify for advancement with his second place finish.
At 130, Justin Studer had a first-round bye and then earned a 1:42 win by fall over Taylor Cody of Okoboji. In the Finals, Studer earned a 9-8 decision over Ty Gibson of Graettinger/Terril to win the crown.
Skyler Rice would earn a first-round 1:07 win by fall over Joel Guthrie of Okoboji and then pinned Jacob Letsche of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn in 1:10 to set up a finals match with Heath Marchand of Graettinger/Terril. Rick earned the title with a 3:53 win by fall over the Knight grappler.
At 189, Tayler Wegner had a first round bye, but scored a 4:50 win by fall over Tyler Fox of Sibley-Ocheyedan to advance to the finals match with Jordan Schemmel of West Lyon. The E-Hawk would earn his first sectional title with a 3:43 win by fall.
Austin McCartan also drew a first-round bye, and took a 4-1 decision win over Dylan Meehan of Marcus-Meriden Cleghorn to set up the finals match at 160 against Zac Jones of Okoboji. Leading 3-1 midway through the final period, McCartan was reversed to tie the match and Jones was able to get near-fall points for a 6-3 decision over McCartan, but the E-Hawk advanced on by virtue of the second place finish.
The road was a little tougher at 171 for Nick Schany, however. Schany earned a 3:09 win by fall over Quinn Parker of G/T in the first round and then pinned Jesse Mickelson of Okoboji in 1:21 of the semi-finals, but in the finals, Schany lost a 5-2 decision to Jacob Pearson of MMC. Schany had to wrestle back for the true second place, meeting Marshall Eddy of Sibley-Ocheyedan, and claimed a 9-1 major decision win to earn the true second and district qualification.
Brett Steinkamp would finish third at 103 pounds, as he had a bye in the first round and then was pinned by Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Brent Reed in :46. As there were only three wrestlers at 103, Steinkamp received the third place finish.
The E-Hawks got a third place finish from Austin Dunnick at 125 pounds on Saturday. Dunnick had a first-round bye but was pinned by Heath Nagel of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in 1:42. Dunnick would rebound to pin James Dubbelde of West Lyon in :51 in the consolation and then ended up wrestling back for the true second at 125 against Connor Tonderum of G/T. Dunnick took an early 4-0 lead and led 8-7 after two periods, but Tonderum rallied to earn a 16-8 major decision and give Dunnick the third place finish.
At 145 pounds, Brady Bailey earned a :40 win by fall over Jordan Hanna of Okoboji in the opening round, but lost a 4-2 decision to Ryan Schany of G/T in the semi-finals. However, Bailey would earn a 5-4 decision over Jessie Glade of Sibley-Ocheyedan to finish third.
At 285 pounds, Andrew Garrelts earned a 2:25 win by fall in the opening round over Mitch McGrauth of G/T, but was pinned in 2:42 by Brendan TerWee of West Lyon in the semi-finals. In the consolation match, Garrelts came up short in a 4-1 decision to Patrick Coleman of Sibley-Ocheyedan to finish fourth.
Brady Garrelts, wrestling at 152 pounds, opened his day being pinned in 1:18 by Wyatt Towne of HMS, but Garrelts came back to earn fifth place with an 8-5 decision victory over Mitch Brady of MMC to round out the E-Hawks’ finishes.
