E-Hawks Face Tough Competition At Irgens Invitational

IDA?GROVE – The Emmetsburg/Ruthven-Ayrshire E’Hawks faced plenty of excellent competition at the 41st Herb Irgens Invitational this past weekend. The two-day tournament at Ida Grove drew 25 teams from around the area, including perennial powerhouse Don Bosco.

The E-Hawks would earn three placings and finished 18th overall in the event. Leading the way for Coach Jared Pickett’s wrestlers was Nick Schany, who would finish third overall at 171 pounds. Tayler Wegner would receive a win by forfeit in the finals for a fifth place finish at 189 pounds and Austin McCartan would finish in sixth place for the E-Hawks at 160 pounds.

First Round action began Friday evening with several “pigtail” matches. Brady Bailey earned a 7-2 win iover John McNaughton of Kingsley-Pierson at 145 pounds. At 152, Brady Garrelts would be the victim of a 1:47 fall to Dru Kenny of Ridge View and at 285 pounds, Andrew Garrelts pinned Thomas Stone of Don Bosco in :18.

Moving into first-round matches, Brett Steinkamp was pinned in :31 by Colby Mauch of Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto in the 103 pound match. At 112, Nick Merwald was pinned in 3:26 by Nathan Ryan of Woodbury Central.

Skyler Rice, the top seed at 140 pounds, earned a 1:31 win by fall over Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn’s Jacob Letsche, but at 145, Brady Bailey would be the victim of a 2:45 fall at the hands of Shay Taylor of Prairie Valley.

Austin McCartan earned a 10-1 major decision win over Josh Van Nalla of Don Bosco in their 160 pound matchup and at 171, Nick Schany earned a 5-2 decision victory over Marshall Eddy of Sibley-Ocheyedan.

Tayler Wegner scored a 2:30 win by fall over Jordan Schemmel of West Lyon in the 189 pound match, but at 285, Andrew Garretls would lose a 6-0 decision to West Lyon’s Brandon TerWee.

Moving into consolation matches, Steinkamp and Merwald had byes, and at 145, Brady Bailey rebounded with a 1:40 win by fall over Cory Escra of Akron-Westfield. Brady Garrelts would be pinned in 5:18 of his match with Nikko Wheeler of Twin River Valley at 152 and was eliminated, while at 285, Andrew Garrelts came back for a 1:00 win by fall over Jason Rhody of Lawton-Bronson to end the first day’s action.

Saturday morning started on a low note for the E-Hawks, as 140 pounder Skyler Rice weighed in a tenth of a pound over, disqualifying him from the day’s action. Moving into the quarterfinal round, Austin McCartan took a 6-4 decision win over Zach Johnes of Okoboji at 160 and at 171, Nick Schany won a 6-5 decision over Jason VanGinkel of West Lyon. Tayler Wegner would be pinned in 1:58 of his 189 pound match with Colten Riley of South Central Calhoun to close out the quarterfinals.

In consolation matches, Brett Steinkamp won a 5-0 decision over Duece Phaley of Sergeant Bluff-Luton at 103, but at 112, Nick Merwald was eliminated when he lost a 5-3 decision to Lucas Smith-Peterson of Audubon.

At 145, Brady Bailey earned a 4:12 win by fall over Dylan Rolfes of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn and Andrew Garrelts pinned Mitch McGrauth of Graettinger/Terril in 3:55 of their heavyweight match.

Consolation quarterfinals saw Brett Steinkamp bow own when he was pinned in 1:48 by Brent Reed of Sibley-Ocheyedan at 103 and Brady Bailey was eliminated in an 11-1 major decision loss to Braden Christensen of Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the 145 pound match.

At 189, Tayler Wegner tallied a 1:42 win by fall over Justin Theisen of M-M-C, but Andrew Garrelts bowed out after being pinned in 4:51 by Nick Fett of Audubon in the 285 pound match.

As action continued, Austin McCartan would end up on the losing end of a 7-1 decision to Cody Hubrich of TRV at 160 and at 171, Nick Schany was pinned by Colton Van’t Hof of Sioux Center in 3:48 of the 171 pound match.

However, Tayler Wegner came back to score a 3:19 win by fall over Matt Streit of Prairie Valley in the 189 pound match to stay alive for a placing.

In the consolation semi-finals, Austin McCartan would end up being pinned in 3:38 by Nolan Kafton of MVAO, but Nick Schany earned a 2:31 win by fall over Cole Simons of Kingsley-Pierson. At 189, Tayler Wegner lost a 10-5 decision to Gabe Doornik of Sioux Center.

In Saturday night’s finals, Austin McCartan wrestled for fifth place at 160, meeting Jacob Meehan of MMC, but lost a hard-fought 9-6 decision to finish in sixth place.

At 171 pounds, Nick Schany would meet Tim Stephens of Lawton-Bronson for the third place honors. Schany controlled the match and earned a 7-3 decision to take the third place finish for the E-Hawks.

Rounding out the evening, Tayler Wegner was paired with Jared McCoy of Woodbury Central for the fifth place match, but McCoy forfeited the match due to illness, giving Wegner the medal placing.

With the season winding down, the Emmetsburg /Ruthven-Ayrshire grapplers travel to Bode tonight (Tuesday) for a double dual with Twin River Valley and Pocahontas Area/Pomeroy-Palmer before traveling to Spencer on Friday for the Lakes Conference Tournament.

With last Thursday’s double dual with ELC and LeMars being postponed, the makeup date will be Tuesday, Feb. 1, at LeMars.

The E-Hawks will then enter Class 1A Sectional Tournament action on Saturday, Feb. 5 at Okoboji High School in Milford, with the 1A District on Feb. 12 at Sibley-Ocheyedan.
