Lady E-Hawks Earn First League Win
The start of the second half of the roundball season was good to Emmetsburg’s Lady E-Hawks Tuesday night. A late holiday gift in the form of a 44-26 win over Storm Lake started the new year off right, and also gave Coach John Kennedy’s team its’ first league win of the season.
With both teams coming into the contest looking for a conference win, someone would go away empty handed, but the Lady E-Hawks were determined it wouldn’t be themselves.
The two teams looked a little ragged in the opening quarter as they turned the ball over off missed passes, but both teams were able to get some offense going early. Emmetsburg would take the early advantage, leading 14-11 at the end of the opening quarter.
The Lady E-Hawks found a little more defensive intensity in the second quarter of play, holding the Tornadoes to just three points in the quarter, while the offense was able to add seven more points as several chip shots rolled off the rim or in and out, frustrating the Lady E-Hawks.
With a 21-14 lead at the intermission, Emmetsburg felt good coming out of the locker room after the break and carried that optimism through the second half of action.
The Lady E-Hawks outscored Storm Lake 13-7 in the third quarter to take a 34-21 lead into the final frame of the contest. With solid play from the reserves coming off the bench late in the contest, Emmetsburg was able to hold Storm Lake to five points in the final quarter to take the 44-26 victory.
Paige Naig led Emmetsburg with 12 points while Nicole Leuer canned a trio of three-pointers on her way to scoring 11 points. Aly Berven added nine points, with Justine Kummer chipping in six markers. Kaity Degen scored three points, while Faith Schmidt added two markers and Whitney Kibbie scored a free throw to round out the scoring.
