Emmetsburg’s E-Hawks knew they had a challenge on their hands when they hosted LeMars in a Lakes Conference matchup Tuesday night. Both teams were undefeated on the young season, but when the final buzzer sounded, Emmetsburg had claimed a 46-39 victory. The win improves Emmetsburg to 4-0 on the season as they prepare to close out the first half of the season on Friday in a meeting with the Spencer Tigers at Spencer.

Tuesday’s game was physical from the opening tip, with the Bulldogs getting into early foul trouble as Emmetsburg took a 14-4 lead after the opening quarter. The E-Hawks saw their offense cool in the second quarter, scoring just three points as LeMars raced back and took a 22-17 lead at the intermission.

The E-Hawks had to battle back hard in the third with some solid defense and patient offense, and managed to re-take the lead midway through the quarter. At the end of the third frame, Emmetsburg was clinging to a 35-31 advantage. LeMars refused to concede anything in the final quarter, but a slam dunk by Nick Wuebker with :50 to go would put the exclamation point on the win for the E-Hawks with the 46-39 final.

Wuebker would earn the double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds, while Ryan Kliegl added eight points and four assists. Bobby Gappa added five points, while Jake Jackson scored three points. Cory Schultes, Steven Heddinger and Jake Carlson all added two points each and Arthur Heldt chipped in a free throw.
