CHEROKEE – The Lakes Conference wrestling season began on a positive note for Coach Jared Pickett and the Emmetsburg/Ruthven-Ayrshire E-Hawk wrestlers Thursday night. The E-Hawks made the long road trip to Cherokee to clay a 48-27 win over the Braves. The win gives the E-Hawks a 3-2 mark in duals this season and makes them 1-0 in the league.

Despite being forced to forfeit at four weights, Emmetsburg/Ruthven-Ayrshire was able to come up with six wins by fall in the dual against the Braves. Wrestling action started at 130 pounds, where both the E-Hawks and Braves were open, resulting in no team points for either squad.

At 135 pounds, Justin Studer dominated Austin Mitchell on his way to a 1:42 win by fall before the E-Hawks forfeited at 140 pounds to Jack Letsche. The Braves’ Rick Weaver also received a win by forfeit from the E-Hawks at 145 pounds to put Cherokee up 12-6.

In the 152 pound match, Brady Bailey would end up losing a 4-1 decision to Zac Anderson before Nick Schany claimed a 4:30 win by fall over Gabe Conley in the 160 pound match to bring the E-Hawks back within three at 12-15.

Austin McCartan took to the mat in the 171 pound match to meet Tyler McLaughlin and earned a 1:29 win by fall over the Cherokee grappler to give the E-Hawks the lead once again, only to see the Braves retake the lead after a forfeit to Manny Bustos at 189 pounds.

Tayler Wegner came out on fire and quickly took Alanzo Ruble to the mat in the 215 pound match before earning a :57 win by fall for a 24-21 team score. The score would see-saw back to the Braves after the heavyweight match, when Andrew Garrelts got caught late in the match with Miah Back and was pinned in 5:50.

Trailing 27-24, the E-Hawks got the lead back when Brett Steinkamp came up with a 2:24 win by fall over Austin Agnitsch at 103 pounds. A pair of forfeit wins for Nick Merwald at 112 and Tyler Leuer at 119 pounds helped put the duel out of reach for the E-Hawks at 42-27 before Austin Dunnick capped the night off with a 1:00 win by fall over Nate Laursen to close out the varsity contest with the 48-27 final score.

There were also five junior varsity matches wrestled prior and following the varsity match. In the first round, Wyatt Sinning earned a 4:39 win by fall over Alex Mauer at 152 pounds and at the same weight, Grant Rehan made his first start of the season but fell victim to Blake Booth, losing by fall in 3:03.

Tanner Dahm also picked up a match at heavyweight, but was pinned in 3:49 of his match against Trevor Devitt.

Following the varsity match, Wyatt Sinning met Blake Booth and was pinned in 1:41 of their 152 pound match before Grant Rehan earned a 1:37 win by fall over Alex Mauer to end the evening.

“We’re improving every time we step onto the mat,” noted Coach Pickett. “There’s a long way to go but I?like what I’m seeing from the guys. They’re working hard and it shows.”

Weather forced the cancellation of Saturday’s E-Hawk Invitational, which will not be re-scheduled at last report.
