Former E-Hawk Wrestling Coaches To Be Honored This Weekend

By Staff | Oct 28, 2010

DES?MOINES – Two former coaches of the Emmetsburg High School wrestling program will be honored this weekend by the National Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame. The ceremonies will be held during the Iowa Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Des Moines.

Former Emmetsburg mentors Bob Roethler and Bob Kenny will both be honored, with Bob Kenny being inducted into the Coaches Hall of Fame.

After coming to Emmetsburg in 2000, Kenny guided the E-Hawks to six Class 2A Individual State Championships, including a four-year straight reign in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003, as well as back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006.

Kenny also guided the E-Hawks to the State Dual Team Championship in 2000 and 2003 as well as appearances from 2000 through 2006 as well.

After leaving Emmetsburg, Kenny served as vice principal at Dowling High School in Des Moines before accepting the position of Athletic Director at Mason City High School.

Bob Roethler will be receiving the 2010 “Medal of Courage” award from the Iowa Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Roethler was previously inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for his coaching accomplishments several years ago.

Roethler also guided the E-Hawks to four consecutive State Championships in 1676, 1977, 1978 and 1979 but suffered an aneurysm that could have ended not only his career, but his life.

However, through determination and perseverance, Roethler battled back from his health concerns and resumed his career as an educator. He served as guidance counselor in Graettinger for several years before accepting a position with Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg.

Today, Bob Roethler remains a fixture in wrestling as he continues to serve as a volunteer assistant with the Emmetsburg E-Hawk wrestling program and has also worked with youth wrestling programs in Emmetsburg and Armstrong.
