E-Hawk Sophs, Freshmen Split Games At Spencer
Emmetsburg’s Sophomore E-Hawk football team opened its season with a 50-0 blowout of the Spencer Tigers on Monday, Aug. 30.
The E-Hawks won the toss and decided to take the wind to their advantage, putting their defense on the field to start the game, and the strategy paid off. The defense stopped Spencer cold and got the ball back on downs. Taking over at the 19-yard line of Spencer, on first down, Emmetsburg’s Andrew Wellik romped into the end zone for a 19 yard touchdown. Quarterback Jake Jackson would keep the ball for the two-point conversion to give the E-Hawks the 8-0 lead.
Emmetsburg’s defense took charge and stopped Spencer again, setting up another E-Hawk score as Wellik would strike on a 36-yard touchdown run, only to have the run called back for holding. Taking the penalty in stride, the E-Hawks would come back to score with Wellik running in from 29 yards out. Mitch Peterson would run in the conversion to make the score 16-0.
The E-Hawk defense would get in its licks on the next series, as a Tiger fumble was scooped up by Clayton Henderson, who returned it for a quick touchdown. The conversion would make the score 24-0.
Emmetsburg would threaten late in the quarter, as Wellik broke loose on a good run of 35 yards, only to have the ball stripped just before the goal line. Spencer recovered the loose ball, but Wellik would blitz on the first play and record a safety to make the score 26-0 to end the quarter.
The E-Hawks would put together a nice long drive to open the second quarter that was concluded with Cody Henderson scoring on a six yard run, and Nick Schany ran in the conversion for a 34-0 lead.
Spencer would try to engineer a drive late in the half, but the E-Hawk defense would stop the drive to end the half and turn the Tigers away.
Coming off the halftime break, Emmetsburg’s 34-0 lead grew in the third quarter when Austin McCartan ran strong out of the halfback position during a drive and capped it off with a four-yard run. Jake Jackson toss a quick pass to Nick Merwald in the end zone for the conversion and a 42-0 lead that would carry into the final frame.
In the last quarter, Emmetsburg would score a final touchdown as Mitch Peterson bulled his way into the end zone from five yards away, and then ran in the conversion to end the contest for the 50-0 victory.
Emmetsburg racked up 331 yards rushing off 32 carries, and picked up three yards passing in the victory. It was a different story for the E-Hawk Freshmen, however, as they lost their opener to the Spencer Freshman by a 28-8 tally. Emmetsburg’s lone touchdown would come from Aaron Bird, who would eventually lead the E-Hawks with 78 yards of rushing in the contest.
