Netters Open Season With A Kill!
LAURENS – The last time Emmetsburg’s Lady E-Hawks opened their volleyball season with a win over Laurens-Marathon was, well, um, last night.
Coach Andrea Accola-Sabin’s Lady E-Hawks battled and never lost their composure in a grueling, five-game match at Laurens Tuesday night to kick off their 2010 campaign on the court.
“What a great win for the girls,” Accola-Sabin said. “They got down, picked themselves up and never quit battling. It’s a good start to the season, but we know what we need to work on to improve and we will.”
Emmetsburg would fall in the first game of the match by a score of 16-25, but came back to win game two by a 25-19 tally. The Lady E-Hawks got on a roll in the third game and won 25-11, only to be edged in game four by a 23-25 score to send the match into the fifth and deciding contest. Emmetsburg led most of the way but Laurens-Marathon fought back and took a 14-13 lead, but Emmetsburg would get a side out to tie the game and got the final two points to earn the most satisfying, 16-14 game victory to open their season.
Paige Naig and Nicole Leuer were both solid at the serving line, making 19 of 22 attempts, with Naig earning four aces and Leuer adding one ace. Hannah ?Drost added 16 of 18 serves with an ace, while Molli Schmeling made 14 of 14 serves. Hillary ?Pico made 13 of 16 service attempts with six aces to her credit and Halie Cody added 10 of 12 service completions with an ace.
At the net, Nicole Leuer pounded down 22 of 26 attacks with five kills, while Morgan Vlasman added 16 of 21 hits with nine kills. Paige Naig made 17 of 18 hits for five kills and Miranda Vlasman was good on 13 of 14 attacks and made five kills.
Chelsey Rouse added 10 of 16 hits to pick up four kills and Nikki Schany added nine of 10 hits for two aces, while Hannah Drost added a hit and kill for an ace.
Paige Naig would solo block four shots in the match, while Hillary Pico dug out 15 shots. Molli Schmeling added seven digs, while Nichole Leuer had four digs. Morgan Vlasman dug out two shots, while Hannah Drost, Nikki Schany, Miranda Vlasman and Halie Cody each added a dig.
Hannah Drost would dish out 14 assists to her teammates in the match, while Halie Cody helped out with nine helpers.
The Lady E-Hawks will play this Saturday in a varsity/JV tournament at Sheldon.
