Bats Slumber In Wins

By Staff | Jul 6, 2010

As the regular season comes to a close, you don’t want to see your offense trail off. For two games at the end of last week, Emmetsburg’s Lady E-Hawks looked to be sliding offensively in a pair of narrow wins over Western Christian and Cherokee. The victories give Emmetsburg a 12-1 mark in the Lakes and 23-2 overall mark.

Wednesday night the Lady E-Hawks struggled with their bats in a 2-1 win against Western Christian at Hull, and then were out-hit on Thursday by Cherokee but played good defense to earn a 1-0 win over the Braves.

Against the Wolfpack on Wednesday, Emmetsburg could muster just five hits in the contest. Maddison Woodruff had her work cut out for her, as she  gave up four hits in the contest but struck out 12 batters without any walks.

Emmetsburg got its hits from Woodruff, Alex Lock, Nichole Hasbrouck and Frankie Schmidt, while  Jenny Hoch had an RBI?single. Morgan Vlasman also came away with an RBI?sacrifice in the winning effort, as Hasbrouck and Schmidt would score the two runs in the contest.

Thursday night the Lady E-Hawks returned home to face Cherokee, but the bats would not awaken in the friendly confines of Emmetsburg’s home field.

Maddison Woodruff led off the contest with a double and her courtesy runner, aly Berven, would come around to score off an RBI?single from Alex Lock for what would be the only score of the game. Nichole Hasbrouck would pick up a base rap in the first inning as well, but would be left waiting on base along with courtesy runner Jayme Penrod when the inning ended.

The game would slip into a defensive battle, with the two teams trading outs and stranding runners on base. However, the Lady E-Hawks got solid pitching from Woodruff and strong defensive play from the rest of the Emmetsburg defenders to hang on for the 1-0 win.

Woodruff would get the win, despite surrendering four hits and a walk while striking out 12 Cherokee batters. Woodruff had the double for the Lady E-Hawks, while Alex Lock had the RBI?single and Nichole Hasbrouck added a base hit to the effort.
