Former E-Hawk Hurdler Earns Third Place Honors In IIAC?Conference Meet

By Staff | Jun 3, 2010

WAVERLY – Sometimes, you never know what you can accomplish until you try. Perhaps a simplistic idea, but for many athletes, the adage is a matra to follow.

For one former Emmetsburg High School track standout, continuing his patch from high school at the collegiate level brought him just a few ticks away from an appearance in the National Finals.

Trevor Dettmann, the son of Scott and Sonja Dettmann of Emmetsburg recently completed his freshman year as a hurdler for the Wartburg College Knights in Waverly.

For Dettmann, depending on one’s point of view, the highlight, or disappointment of the season  came when he missed out qualifying for the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Nationals by 4/100 of a second, no small feat for a true freshman.

The near miss was soothed somewhat in May when Dettmann earned third place in the 110 meter high hurdles at the IIAC?Conference Track and Field Championships at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake.

The Wartburg men finished second in the IIAC conference at the conference meet, while the Wartburg Womens’ team claimed their 11th consecutive conference championship.

Both the Wartburg men and womens’ track teams are coached by Marcus Newsome.
