McCain Earns All Conference Honors
ARNOLDS?PARK – With strong winds and rain giving the competitors a true feel of the origins of the game, Emmetsburg’s E-Hawk golfers ended up with a fourth place finish in the 2010 Lakes Conference Boys Golf Tournament Monday at Brooks National. The E-Hawks also placed one member of the squad on the All Conference team at the conclusion of the 18 hold tournament.
Under the Lakes Conference rules, the eight lowest scores earn All Conference recognition at the tournament, and E-Hawk junior Ben McCain would tally the fourth lowest score of the day to earn elite status. McCain led the field of golfers after the first nine holes with a score of 37, and shot a 40 in the second round to total a 77 for the All Conference honor, as well as the best score for the E-Hawks.
Other Emmetsburg scoring saw Justin Kibbie shoot rounds of 41 and 42 for an 83 stroke total, while NAte Brown carded a 45 and 40 for an 85. Arthur?Heldt played through a bout with the flu on Monday and toughed out rounds of 43 and 45 to score an 88. Tyler Clasing shot a pair of 45 stroke rounds for a 90 and Matt Ballman added rounds of 43 and 50 for a 93 stroke game.
“That was some tough golf,” noted Emmetsburg Head Coach Kort Freeman. “Ben really played well for the conditions, and so did everyone else. Justin Kibbie and Nate Brown had good games, and I have to give Arthur Heldt a lot of credit for sticking it out and playing 18 feeling as sick as he did.”
The E-Hawks open their post season campaign on Friday when they play in the Class 2A Sectional tournament hostied by Okoboji at Emerald Hills Golf Club at Arnolds Park.
