Former E-Hawk Sets New Hurdle Marks

By Staff | May 11, 2010

A former Emmetsburg High School prep athlete has established a pair of hurdling marks while participating in track and field at North Iowa Area Community College.

Ethan Dykstra, the son of Doug and Carol Dykstra of Emmetsburg, set new marks in the 55 meter and 60 meter hurdles for the NIACC?Indoor Track and Field team this Spring during competitions.

In the 55 meter hurdles, Dykstra set a new NIACC?record with a time of :08.14 and then eclipsed the old 60 meter hurdle mark with a time of :08.81.

Dykstra originally entered NIACC to play football, but when the football program was eliminated in a budget measure, Dykstra, who had run track for the Emmetsburg E-Hawks in his high school career, made the switch to the collegiate track program at North Iowa.

The pre-mortuary science major did not compete as a freshman at NIACC, but came out to join the track and field squad as a sophomore.

“Ethan works extremely hard,” noted North Iowa Head Track Coach Curtis Vais.
