Emmetsburg’s E-Hawk golf team started their Lakes Conference campaign on a positive note Tuesday with a two-stroke victory over Storm Lake. The victory came on the E-Hawks’ home links at the Five Island Golf Course.

Storm Lake’s Ryan Gutz would edge out Emmetsburg’s Arthur Heldt for meet medalist honors in a playoff, as both golfers shot rounds of 35 over the course, which had to be shortened to a par 33 due to standing water after Monday’s thunderstorms.

Emmetsburg would take the win with a team score of 149 to Storm Lake’s 151.

With Heldt’s round of 35 leading the way, Emmetsburg also got a 35 from Ben McCain, while Nate Brown carded a 39. Justin Kibbie shot a round of 40, with Tyler Clasing shooting a 42 and Matt Ballman rounding out the varsity scores with his round of 43.

In the junior varsity match, Emmetsburg would take the victory over the young Tornadoes by shooting a 171 stroke total to Storm Lake’s 212.

Jake Jackson led the E-Hawk Junior Varsity with his round of 37. Josh Kibbie followed with a 44, while Taylor Wegner and Nick Schany both shot rounds of 45. Tyler Drost and Austin Bonnstetter rounded out the JV?efforts with rounds of 47.

Coach Kort Freeman’s E-Hawks will return to the links Friday afternoon, April 16, when they host the Spencer Tigers and Pocahontas Area/Pomeroy-Palmer Indians.
