Track Season Opens At Lakes Conference Indoor Meet

The 2010 track and field season opened Thursday , March 18 with the Lakes Conference Indoor Meet at Dordt College in Sioux Center. For both the Emmetsburg E’Hawks and Lady E’Hawks, the meet gave the competitors a chance to run competivly and gave coaches a chance to see where their squads are early in the season.

No team scores were kept at the indoor meet, which runs an abbreviated slate of events.

Coach Tyler Beving’s E’Hawk thinclads opened with a pair of placings in the shot put competition, as Phil Brown threw 39’6” to take 12th place and Andrew Garrelts threw 35’ 6.5” to claim 20th place honors.

In the long jump, Brady Berkland finished fifth by leaping 17’10”. Jacob Morris placed 11th with a jump of 17’2” and Clayton Henderson finished 25th by leaping 14’2”.

Emmetsburg got a 16th place effort from Josh Kummer in the 800 meter run with a 2:32.30 clocking, while Nick Merwald ran the 800 meters in a time of 2:53.57 for 24th place.

Joey Naig participated in the 55 meter hurdles and finished third overall with a time of :08.34, while Austin Oppenheimer finished the 55 meters in a time of :09.91.

Moving into the 55 meter dash, Brady Berkland earned a third place finish with his effort of :06.77 and Cory Schultes finished fifth with a time of :06.88.

Cory Schultes would earn second place honors in the 200 meter dash by finishing in :24.56, while Brady Berkland followed up with a :25.54 effort for the sixth place finish.

Nick Merwald finished the 1600 meter run in a time of 6:13.91, which translated into 22nd place, while Josh Kummer earned 25th place with a time of 6:28.84.

Emmetsburg sported three 4×200 relay teams on Thursday, with the first group finishing in a time of 1:44.36, good for the fourth place honors. Relay C finished in 14th place with a 1:50.48 time and Relay B was 15th with their effort of 1:52.53.

The?E’Hawks also ran three 4×400 relays, with group A finishing ninth with a time of 4:05.37. Group C was 13th with a 4:09.58 clocking and Group B finished 17th with a time of 4:30.03 to close out the Emmetsburg efforts.

For Coach Dan Dooley’s Lady E’Hawks, Nichole Hasbrouck earned eighth place honors in the shot put by throwing 29’5.5”, while teammate Hilary Pico placed tenth with a throw of 28’10”.

 Morgan Vlasman would finish in a five-way tie for sixth place in the high jump  competition, as she cleared 4’6”.

Rachael Moore claimed third place honors in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:51.16, while in the 55 meter hurdles, Jordan Morris placed fourth with a :09.60 clocking. Katie Malm was sixth with a tie of :10.01, with Whitney Kibbie running :10.11 for 10th place honors and Alyson Berven finishing 11th with a time of :10.13.

In the 55 meter dash, Jordan Kerber took fourth place honors with a time of :07.69, while Nicole Leuer took seventh place with a time of :07.90. Maddison Woodruff was 10th with a :07.99 effort and Hannah Priest would place 12th overall with a time of :08.13.

Kaity Degen turned in a time of :29.46 to finish fifth in the 200 meter dash, while teammates Hannah Priest finished 12th with a :31.15 clocking, and Hilary Pico finished 15th with a :41.61 effort. Molli Schmeling rounded out the effort in the 200 meters with a :32.46 clocking for 18th place.

Rachael Moore would complete the 1500 meter run in a time of 5:58.33, good for a sixth place finish, while Tayler Bruns ran a 6:32.89 for ninth place.

Emmetsburg’s first 4×200 relay group placed eighth with a time of 2:02.13, with the second quartet finishing tenth in a time of 2:05.72.

In the 4×400 relay, group A finished fifth with a time of 4:40.11 and group B was 13th with their time of 5:01.40 to wrap up the Lady E’Hawks’ efforts.

Both the E’Hawks and Lady E’Hawks were scheduled to run Tuesday, March 30, at an earlybird meet in Spirit Lake, but that meet has been cancelled. The first outdoor action for both teams will now be Tuesday, April 6, at Spencer for a triangular with Spencer and Estherville Lincoln Central with a 4:30 p.m. start.
