Emmetsburg Junior Varsity Boys Complete Successful Season

Emmetsburg’s E’Hawk Junior Varsity boys finished their campaign on the hardwood with a mark of 15-3 for Coach Phil Geelan. The following is a recap of their season.

In action on Jan. 11, the E’Hawks downed Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn by a score of 47-26. Bobby Gappa had 13 points, while Jake?Jackson added nine points with eight rebounds.  Marcus Akridge scored eight points with seven rebounds, while Zach Overburg added six points and Steven Heddinger came up with four points. Mike Wolff, Austin Oppenheimer and Arthur Heldt all scored two points and Dennis Theesfeld added a free throw.

Jan. 12 the E’Hawks defeated Cherokee 45-24. Bobby Gappa and Arthur Heldt led the scoring with 11 points each, while Steven Heddinger had eight points with six board. Jake Jackson added six points with four board, while Austin Oppenheimer had three points. Zach Overburg, Marcus Akridge and Mike Wolff all added two points in the winning effort.

It would be a closer battle on Jan. 15 when the E’Hawks edged Spirit Lake 26-24.

The scoring was spread around with Jake Jackson scoring nine points and making four steals in the win. Arthur Heldt added seven points and Bobby Gappa tallied six points.  Austin Oppenheimer added three points, while Jake Carlson came up with a free throw. Steven Heddinger would have the defensive game with seven rebounds and six blocked shots.

The young E’Hawks ran into a roadblock at Hull on Jan. 18, when they fell by a 53-35 margin to the Wolfpack.

Austin Oppenheimer would led Emmetsburg with 12 points, while Bobby Gappa and Jake Jackson both added seven points. Steven Heddinger and Arthur Heldt scored four points each and Jake Carlson added a free throw to give the E’Hawks a 7-2 mark.

The E’Hawks would rebound the next evening, defeating Cherokee by a 39-29 tally.

Bobby Gappa would led the offense with eight points, while Jake Carlson, Austin Oppenheimer, Arthur Heldt and Steven Heddinger all tallied six points. Heddinger added four blocks and six rebounds, while Zach Overburg tallied five points and  Tyler Thornbury added two points to the effort.

The next week saw the E’Hawks earn a 52-30 non-conference win over Manson Northwest Webster on Jan. 21.

Steven Heddinger and Jake Carlson both scored nine points in the win, while Austin Oppenheimer and Arthur Heldt both added eight markers to the coffers. Heldt also dished out five assists, while Bobby Gappa scored seven points and Zach Overburg scored five points. Mike Wolff added four points, while Dennis Theesfeld scored two points.

Against Estherville Lincoln Central on Jan. 22, the E’Hawk JV?claimed a 48-33 victory over the Midgets.

 Steven Heddinger had the big night with 16 points and nine boards, while Bobby Gappa added 11 points. Arthur Heldt would pull down seven rebounds and scored six points while Zach Overburg also scored six points. Mike Wolff chipped in four points, while Austin Oppenheimer added three points and Jake Carlson tallied two points.

A matchup with LeMars on Jan. 26 saw the E’Hawks collect a 41-34 win over the Bulldogs.

Jake Jackson led the effort with nine points, seven rebounds and four steals, while Steven Heddinger tallied eight points and nine  rebounds with five blocked shots. Jake Carlson added six points while Bobby Gappa and Austin Oppenheimer both scored five points. Arthur Heldt chipped in four points, while Zach Overburg and Marcus Akridge each added two points.

Emmetsburg would pick up a most satisfying win on Jan. 29 with a 46-40 win over the Spencer Junior Varsity squad.

Scoring for E’Hawks against the Tigers was led by Jake Jackson’s 19 point effort. Austin Oppenheimer added a dozen points, while   Bobby Gappa had five points and Steven Heddinger added four points. Marcus Akridge tallied two points and pulled down six rebounds, while Arthur Heldt and Jake Carlson both added two points to the effort.

 Feb. 1 the E’Hawks ran over Sioux Central in a lopsided 58-19 victory.

Steven Heddinger earned the double-double with his 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Marcus Akridge added 11 points and five rebounds. Jake?Jackson had 11 points with eight rebounds and dished out five assists.

Jake Carlson scored eight points, with Dennis Theesfeld adding six points. Austin Oppenheimer tallied four points and dished out six assists, while Arthur Heldt and Dan Pelzer both scored two points to improve to 13-3 on the season.

Emmetsburg’s record would improve to 14-2 the next evening with a 61-33 win over the Storm Lake’s JV squad.

The E’Hawks got 12-point efforts from Steven Heddinger and Marcus Akridge , while Dennis Theesfeld, Zach Overburg and Austin Oppenheimer all scoring seven points. Bobby Gappa and Jake Carlson both scored five points, while Jake Jackson added four points to the effort. Arthur Heldt and Mike Wolff rounded out the scoring with two points each.

The season came to a close on Feb. 11 when Emmetsburg came up with a 43-34 win over Spirit Lake.

Jake Carlson scored four points and grabbed four rebounds, while Steven Heddinger added two points and four rebounds and Zach Overburg scored two points in the winning effort.

The young E’Hawks would close out their season with a final mark of 15 wins and three losses
