Raiders’ Rally Falls Short In 1A District Semi-Final
SPENCER – The hopes of a substate and state tournament berth came to a heartbreaking halt Wednesday night for the Ruthven-Ayrshire Raiders. RA was tripped up by a slow start in a 38-35 Class 1A District semi-final loss to Laurens-Marathon in Spencer.
“We just got off to a very slow start,”?noted Ruthven-Ayrshire Head Coach Randy Hough. “We finally got it going in the fourth quarter, but by then it was too little, too late.”
The Raiders and Chargers had never met in the regular season, due to weather.
RA struggled to get their offense going against the Chargers, as the Raiders would trail 12-8 a the end of the first quarter. The two teams would both struggle in the second quarter, as the Raiders tallied another eight points, while the Chargers added 10 points to their total to post a 22-16 lead at the intermission.
Coming out of the locker room to start the second half, Ruthven-Ayrshire continued to struggled on the offense, as they were outscored two-to-one in the third quarter, scoring just a half-dozen points to Laurens-Marathon’s 12 tallies.
Trailing 34-22 to start the final quarter, the Raiders found something for their game in the break between quarters. Ruthven-Ayrshire came out and defensively shut Laurens-Marathon down, allowing the Chargers just a pair of buckets in the final quarter.
On the offensive end, the Raiders began hitting shots, and reeled off 13 points to cut the deficit to a trio, but time ran out not only on the game clock, but on the Raiders’ season for the 38-35 heartbreaking loss.
Ruthven-Ayrshire was led by Mark Geelan’s 12 points, while Ryan Sikora, Zach Loring and Colton ?Bakken all scored six points and Trevin Enderson added five points. Ryan Sikora grabbed 11 rebounds and handed out three assists, along with Zach Loring.
“All in all, we had a great season, finishing at 17-3,”?Hough said. “I want to thank the fans for all the support they have given us throughout the season.”
