ALGONA?- Emmetsburg’s E’Hawks claimed a Class 2A?District Crown Wednesday night with a 49-47 win over Garner-Hayfield in tournament play at Algona. More importantly, the win set up a Substate matchup with Carroll Kuemper in Forst Dodge on Saturday for the right to advance to the state tournament.

The E’Hawks would trail early on Wednesday, going down 5-2 until a couple of three-pointers from Cory Schultes gave the E’Hawks an 8-5 lead at the end of the opening frame.

There would not be much scoring in the second quarter, as both defenses worked hard to control the boards and the offense struggled, except for back to back treys from Schultes that would give Emmetsburg the lead at the half, 18-16.

The lead would go back and forth in the third frame, with Emmetsburg holding a 32-29 advantage to start the final frame, before Garner-Hayfield tied the game up with :45 to go. The E’Hawks would work the offense for the final shot that they wanted, and with :02.7 to go, Nick Wuebker got the ball in the middle and went up for the short jumper and the bucket.

With a 49-47 lead, Garner-Hayfield got the ball back and got to midcourt for a final timeout with :01.5 to go.

On the inbounds, the shot bounced off the left side of the rim as the E’Hawks pulled down the rebound to start the celebration.

Nick Wuebker led the way with 18 points, while Cory Schultes added 12 points. Ryan Kliegl had 11 points in the effort, while Tommy Kuecker added five. Bobby Gappa had two points and Nate Brown added a free throw for one point.
