Wolverines’ Season Ends In Tourney Opener
WEST?BEND – The tournament season came to a quick end for the Wolverines of West Bend-Mallard on Wednesday night, as they were eliminated in their opener by Newell-Fonda in a 71-47 decision.
Newell-Fonda would open the game by taking a 17-12 lead over the Wolverines at the end of the first quarter of play. But in the second quarter, Newell-Fonda’s defense put the stop on the Wolverines, giving up just eight points, while on the other end of the floor, the Mustangs erupted for 25 points to take a42-20 lead at the halftime break.
Trailing by 22 points to start the second half, West Bend-Mallard tried to cut into Newell-Fonda’s cushion. The Mustangs were able to keep their offense rolling along at full speed, outscoring West Bend-Mallard by a 20-12 margin for a 62-32 lead at the close of the third quarter.
Newell-Fonda was able to go to their bench in the final quarter with the 30-point lead as the Wolverines continued to battle hard, but it was simply too steep of a mountain to conquer as the Mustangs claimed the71-47 final margin of victory.
For West Bend-Mallard, Jake Goodchild would lead the scoring with 20 points, while Taylor Foley added 10 points to the effort. Chris Schmidt came away with eight points, while Mitch Bonnstetter added four points. Clay Douglas chipped in three points and Greg Mader rounded out the offensive effort with two points.
Jake Goodchild would grab seven rebounds, while Chris Schmidt pulled down six boards. Mitch Bonnstetter handed out five assists and made four steals, while Chris Schmidt dished out four helpers.
West Bend-Mallard connected on 20 of 42 shots from field goal range for 48 percent, and made three of 11 shots from outside the circle for 28 percent accuracy. At the charity stripe, the Wolverines were able to make four of their six opportunities for 67 percent shooting.
The loss ends West Bend-Mallard’s season with an overall mark of 1-20.
