Knights Send Jensen To 1A Finals
Graettinger/Terril senior Michael Jensen would bring home a runner-up finish at 145 pounds in Class 1A at the conclusion of the 2010 Iowa State Wrestling Championshps.
Jensen faced a tough road to earn the center stage on Saturday night, starting the tournament on Thursday morning along with teammate Nate Howard.
In the opening round match at 145, Jensen would meet Josh Adam of Iowa City Regina, and won advancement with a 4-1 decision victory.
Junior teammate Nate Howard would match up against Andrew Nodtvedt of Central Springs in the opening round at 189 pounds on Thursday and advanced with a 3-1 victory after scoring a takedown in a sudden-death overtime period.
Moving into the quarterfinal round, Jensen was paired off with Colby Grothoff of South Hardin and earned a win by fall in 3:23 of the match to advance to the Friday night semi-finals at 145.
At 189, Howard would go up against Bryce Olson of Eagle Grove. Olson would hand Howard a 7-2 decision loss, dropping Howard into the consolation side of the brackets and a wrestle back match.
In the wrestle back, Howard drew Nick Schmelzer of South Winnesheik and colected a :57 win by fall to stay alive.
In Friday’s semi-finals, Jensen drew the unenviable task of meeting up with Clay Welter of Gilbertville-Don Bosco. Jensen aggressively wrestled the Don Bosco wrestler, and took a 6-4 lead before Welter dislocated a shoulder when being taken down and had to injury default to Jensen, giving the Knight his trip to the finals.
For Howard, the next opponent was Ethan Calvert of Interstate 35-Truro. Howard would control the match to collect a 5-2 decision to advance into the consolation quarterfinals.
In the Friday night consolation match, Howard wrestled against Kyle Soderblom of Lynville-Sully. Howard would score an 8-3 decision victory to put him into the third place match against his first-round opponent, Andrew Nodtvedt of Central Springs.
Saturday, Nodtvedt remembered how he had lost to Howard in the opening round two days earlier, and returned the favor to the Knight wrestler, taking a4-1 decision over Howard, giving the G/T junior the fourth place finish at 189 pounds in Class 1A.
That would bring up Saturday night’s Championship match on the center mat on the floor of Wells Fargo Arena.
Meeting Justin Hoffman of East Buchanan, Jensen and Hoffman battled hard through 6:00, with both wrestlers putting their opponents on their back for a few moments. However, it was Hoffman who appeared to hold a slight advantage, as he would be able to score a pair of late takedowns to edge out and away from?Jensen to win a 17-9 major decision that gave Jensen the runner-up medal at 145 pounds.
