SIOUX?RAPIDS – The post season for the Emmetsburg Lady E’Hawks came to an unhappy close Saturday night in Class 2A Regional tournament action. The Sioux Central Rebels overcame an early deficit and were able to claim a 47-33 win over the Lady E’Hawks, ending Emmetsburg’s season with a mark of 4-16 overall and a 2-12 mark in the Lakes Conference.

“All season long, we told the girls they had to bring their lunch pail with them to every game, because they were going to have to work hard in each game,” Emmetsburg Head Coach John Kennedy noted. “And they did that all season long. The season didn’t go quite the way we wanted it to, but these girls played hard and they played with pride in every game.”

Emmetsburg, coming off a regular season finale victory over Pocahontas Area/Pomeroy-Palmer on Thursday night, faced a daunting challenge in meeting the Rebels, who entered the tournament matchup with a 15-4 mark on the season.

But, the Lady E’Hawks were ready for the challenge. The game got off to a slow start, with neither team being able to get much going in the terms of offense, but Emmetsburg was able to put a good defensive effort on the floor to knot the score at 7-7 after one quarter of play.

In the second quarter, the Lady E’Hawks found a little offensive spark with a three-pointer by Nicole Leuer that would help edge Emmetsburg out from the Rebels. A stingy defense forced several misses by the Rebels, but the Lady E’Hawks were paying the price in a foul disparity, which saw Emmetsburg whistled for nine fouls to just one for Sioux Center in the half.

But, despite the adversity, it was Emmetsburg that wen to the locker room at the intermission with the five-point, 18-13 lead over Sioux Central.

The Rebels would come out in the second half and cranked up their defensive pressure, going to a stiff, full-court press that began to take a toll on the Lady E’Hawks with several steals and turnovers.

Sioux Central would retake the lead at 32-26 when the third frame ended off some three-pointers and several offensive rebounds and putbacks.

In the final quarter, the Lady E’Hawks continued to struggle with turnovers as Sioux Central was able to preserve the 47-33 win.

Paige Naig would lead Emmetsburg with 16 points, while Justine Kummer added eight. Tiffany Wollum scored six points and Nicole Leuer added three points.

The Lady E’Hawks bid farewell to seniors Tiff Wollum and Maddison Woodruff.
