Graettinger/Terril Sends Pair To State Tourney
SIOUX CENTER – The Class 1A District Wrestling Tournament at Sioux Center proved to be a major challenge for the Graettinger/Terril Knight wrestlers. After bringing seven wrestlers to the district meet, just two advanced on to the State Wrestling Tournament.
Senior Michael Jensen and junior Nate Howard will move on to Wells Fargo Arena on Thursday for the state tournament with their District championships for the Knights.
“I thought Michael and nate wrestled well and took control of their matches,” noted GT Head Coach Cody Alesch.
Michael Jensen earned his return to the state meet by opening action at 145 pounds with a 3:43 win by fall over Jason Swetz of Sioux Center and then won the title with a 14-3 major decision win over Wyatt Towne of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn.
Nate Howard started out with a :39 win by fall over Tanner Knop of Hinton in the 189 pound opener on Saturday, and then earned his state tournament berth with a 13-3 major decision victory over Auston Sasse of West Sioux.
The Knights ended up with a trio of third place finishes on Saturday, as Tyler Dalen at 103 pounds, Austin Thompson at 112 and Tyler Manning at 119 pounds all finished in third place, while Connor Tonderum at 125 and Trent Lundgren at 130, both finished in fourth place.
“The three third-place finishers wrestled hard and competed well, but just did not get on their offense like they need to,”?Alesch said. “All three lost close matches all day, but need to get after it more in order to get through. I was proud of the guys for the fights they had, but we just did not have enough offense.”
The two Knight qualifiers will begin their quests for state placings at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18, at the State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
